Burlington voters consider community police oversight board

Burlington, Vermont will vote Tuesday on whether to create a Community Police Oversight board with the authority to discipline Burlington police officers. If the board is created, it would need to be approved by the Legislature and governor. Mayor Miro Weinberger, a Democrat, opposes the board, writing that police oversight systems in Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin are "dramatically different" from what is proposed for Burlington. Critics of the board say it will undermine efforts to rebuild the police department.
