Turkey’s opposition alliance fractures, fails to agree on challenger to Erdogan

Meral Aksener, the leader of the nationalist Good (Iyi) Party, announced on Friday that she will not support the country's Opposition coalition's joint candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, to challenge Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the critical presidential elections expected to be held on May 14. This could deal a blow to the opposition alliance's years-long efforts to set up a united front against Erdogan's government. The polls suggest that Kilicdaroglu's chances of winning are lower than those of the two mayors nominated by the opposition bloc, Mansur Yavas and Ekrem Imamoglu.
