The Asiatic Cheetah is critically endangered and only a dozen members of the species remain in the wild. Three critically endangered cubs were born to a mother in captivity in Iran and one of the cubs, Pirouz, died from Kidney Failure. Iran began a United Nations-supported cheetah protection programme in 2001 and had hoped the birth of the cubs in captivity would help increase the cheetah population, but only two of the cubs survived.
