The hospital in Essex has suspended the use of Nitrous Oxide gas due to safety concerns for the medical staff who are exposed to the high levels of the gas for prolonged periods. Midwives may be exposed to the gas for many hours in rooms with the doors closed to ensure privacy for the labouring woman. Nitrous oxide is a tasteless, odorless gas which has been used for more than a century as a labour analgesic. While it does not remove all pain, it can help make it more bearable. The gas is administeed under the brand name Entonox and is mixed with oxygen. It is breathed through a mask or mouthpiece as contractions begin and takes between 15 to 20 seconds to work.
