Why students’ ATARs are becoming more important

Students who obtain an ATAR below 60 in their year 12 exams are three times as likely to drop out of university within six years as those with an ATAR of 80 or higher. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, or ATAR, remains the most predictive factor in whether students complete their degrees. The Centre for Independent Studies has released research indicating that the ATAR is becoming more important, not less, as the number of students dropping out of university rises. The Australian government has set ambitious targets to increase places for disadvantaged students, but these targets will not automatically boost completion rates unless systems are put in place to help students finish their courses.
