8 Top Colleges and Universities in Rivers State

Rivers State is blessed with the presence of notable Colleges and Universities. The Schools established by Federal Government of Nigeria, Rivers State Government and private investors have become iconic in the State education sector.

Interestingly, there are about eight (8) Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities in Rivers State.

The Tertiary institutions in Rivers State include:

1. Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, formerly Port Harcourt Polytechnic:

Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic is a Polytechnic funded by the Government of Rivers State, located in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Former names include; Rivers State College of Arts and Science; Rivers State School of Basic Studies; Port Harcourt Polytechnic before it was changed to Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON, who signed the Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill into law on 4 July 2016.

The Polytechnic was established in 1987.
2. Eastern Polytechnic

Eastern Polytechnic is the first private polytechnic in Rivers State, Nigeria. It was established in 2008 and has its main campus in Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt. The main address of Eastern Polytechnic is 15, 34 Ogboroma street, Igwuruta Rd, Rumuokwurusi, Rumukoroshe.


3. Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku:

The Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku is a federal government higher education institution located in Omoku, Rivers State, Nigeria. It is affiliated to University of Nigeria for its degree programmes.

Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku was established in 1989.
4. Ignatius Ajuru University at Rumuolumeni, Nkpolu Oroworukwo and Ndele:

Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, (IAUE) is a Nigerian university previously known as Rivers State College of Education from June 1971- October 2009. The University is located at Rumuolumeni in Obio-Akpor and Ndele in Emohua Local Governments of Rivers State.

5. Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic:

Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic (formerly Rivers State Polytechnic) is a tertiary learning institution in Bori City, Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. It has two campuses, one for the School of Management Sciences and the other for the School of Engineering.

The polytechnic was established by the Rivers State Government on 13 May 1988.

6. PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt:

PAMO University of Medical Sciences is a private medical university located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The university was established in 2017 as the first private medical university in Nigeria.

PAMO University of Medical Sciences was founded by the former governor of Rivers State, Dr Sir Peter Odili.

The Institution is located at No. 1, Tap Road Off, Port Harcourt – Aba Expy, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt.

7. Rivers State University formally Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST):

Rivers State University (RIVSU or RSU), formerly Rivers State University of Science and Technology (UST or RSUST), is a university located in the Diobu (Mile III) area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Rivers State University was formally known as Rivers State College of Science and Technology between 1972 to 1980 and the name was changed to Rivers State University of Science and Technology in 1980. However, in 2017, the State Governor, Nyeson Ezenwo Wike changed the name to Rivers State University.

The School was established in 1972 as University college. In 1980, is was converted to University.

8. University of Port Harcourt, Choba.

University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is a Federal Government of Nigeria owned Institution. The Institution aims to be ranked amongst the best universities in Africa, renowned for its teaching, research, creativity and innovation.

University of Port Harcourt is located along East/West Road, PMB 5323 Choba, Rivers State, Nigeria. UNIPORT was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt and was given University status in 1977.
