‘Horrific’: 3 dead, 5 hurt in Michigan State University shooting

According to police, there were multiple shootings on the East Lansing campus of Michigan State University on Monday night, resulting in the deaths of three people and the injuries of five others. One suspect also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During a briefing for the media, MSU Police and Public Safety announced that the injured victims had been taken to a hospital. During a press conference, interim deputy chief Chris Rozman stated that all five are still in critical condition.

Hospital Communications Director John Foren that the shooting resulted in five patients being admitted to the facility. Foren stated that they are not anticipating any additional patients but had no information regarding their conditions.

Rozman stated that the shelter-in-place order has been lifted because there is no longer a threat on campus. He identified the suspect as a 43-year-old man without university affiliation.

Rozman stated, “He is not a student, faculty, or staff member.” We also have no idea why he came to campus this evening to perform this task.

Rozman stated that when police responded to the initial 911 call of shots fired in Berkey Hall at 8:18 p.m., they found “several” victims there. Rozman claims that after receiving a second report of a shooting, police responded to the MSU Union building and discovered additional victims there.

According to Rozman, two of the fatalities occurred at Berkey Hall and one at the MSU Union building.

The interim deputy chief stated that police are still attempting to ascertain the identity of the suspect and any potential motive.

Rozman stated, “This is still a fluid situation.” We are processing several different crime scenes with our state and federal partners, and there is still a lot of work to be done.”

At first, the police stated that the campus fitness center IM East had “multiple reported injuries.” Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall, the MSU Union, and Berkey Hall have all been cleared, according to the police.

Rozman stated that as the shooting progressed, police received “multiple” calls from other campus buildings. The officers went to the scene, but they didn’t find any evidence of any incidents there.

He stated that his department had begun acquiring and analyzing security footage from campus buildings.

He stated, “There are surveillance cameras that are going to be useful and helpful in this investigation, which will aid our investigators in putting the pieces together and trying to understand a little more about what happened.” These cameras will be of use to our investigators in this investigation.

On Tuesday, authorities advised students not to visit the campus and canceled all activities on the campus for 48 hours, including classes and athletics.
