The body of Teacher Berni Flor Mejía was found on the border between Mexico and Guatemala. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed that it opened an investigation folder in accordance with the Femicide Protocol.
The Sierra Border District Prosecutor’s Office announced that the Municipal Police of Amatenango de La Frontera reported on the discovery of the teacher’s body on the Motozintla – Frontera Comalapa road section, near the pantheon of the Nuevo Amatenango ejido, in the municipality of Amatenango de la Frontera.
“Upon arriving at the scene, elements of the Investigative Police assigned to the Sierra District Prosecutor’s Office found the lifeless body of a woman, with wounds apparently caused by a firearm. Approximately 25 centimeters from the body, a shell casing was located,” detailed the Chiapas FGE bulletin.
The teacher was at a Chiapas Bachilleres located in the community of Amatenango de Frontera, where she taught classes, when an armed commando arrived at the educational facility and called her. The educator accompanied the subjects, some of them hooded, and later got into a van. Since that day she was not heard from again, until this Tuesday.
The teacher was deprived of her liberty on Thursday, September 7. However, witnesses to the events indicated that this case would be linked to alleged extortion carried out by the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).
Berni’s husband is a public transport driver and works for the Peniel company, which covers the Frontera Comalapa-Motozintla route. Some of his operators, according to reports from the Latinus media, have been victims of extortion by alleged members of the “four letters cartel.”
On August 11, workers from said company were contacted by CJNG operators and were allegedly threatened to join the road blockades that would be carried out that day. However, the transporters refused to participate in the events.
As a result of this refusal, the teacher Berni was kidnapped, as part of a reprisal against her husband, who had been forced to pay a monthly fee to the members of organized crime so that they would let him work.
“They were summoning us to block, but we didn’t go. They accused us of being in favor of the opposing group (presumably it would be the Sinaloa Cartel). But it’s a lie, they didn’t let us work anymore. They told us that they no longer wanted to see us on the road and then the kidnapping of teacher Berni, the wife of a coworker, happened,” said one of the transporters, according to the aforementioned media.
Residents and transporters of Comalapa demonstrated in various parts of the town to demand the release of teacher Berni. Even on Monday, September 11, a group of civilians set fire to a cargo truck on the Mazapa de Madero border bridge. With this unit they blocked the road so that they could “free” the 43-year-old teacher.
Likewise, taxi and van drivers displayed banners in their units accusing several CJNG operators of allegedly being involved in these events. Among them, the name of Vladimir López Orantes, alias “El Ruso”, the supposed plaza boss stood out.
“We demand the release and presentation alive of the Teacher Berni Flor Mejía, kidnapped by you scourges,” the message read. Likewise, they requested the intervention of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to resolve the issue of insecurity in the region.
It should be remembered that on the day of her kidnapping, Berni was inside the High School Distance Education High School (Cobach-ENSAD), in the Río Guerrero community. According to preliminary reports, three men entered the campus and asked for Flor, who after exchanging a few words forced her to get into a white van.
