Ex-British F1 driver calls out Lewis Hamilton survey demanding Max Verstappen loses title

Former British F1 driver Tiff Needell has suggested a poll demanding Lewis Hamilton be awarded the 2021 title is pointless. The ex-Fifth Gear host explained F1 bosses would not listen to the survey and alter Max Verstappen’s win almost 18 months on.

Over 90,000 people have backed a Change.org poll calling for Max Verstappen to be stripped of the crown. However, when asked if fan action could lead to F1 bosses altering the result, Needell told Express Sport: “No. No.

“We can’t change those as much as anyone might want to. They can’t do. I think if you cancel the race Max is still leading the championship. I can’t see any races being annulled or any championships being removed.”

Poll organiser, Patel Gordon-Bennett claims there is a case to overturn the result because F1 rules were not followed at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Michael Masi didn’t let all lapped cars overtake the safety car at the restart with only those between Hamilton and Verstappen allowed through.

Verstappen was able to cruise past the Mercedes in a matter of corners while other drivers were left baffled by the move. The FIA later accepted human error was to blame for the incident and Masi was removed from his role.

Gordon-Bennett said: “I believe that justice was not served on Sunday December 12, 2021 when the FIA stewards denied Lewis Hamilton of his win of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With less than one lap remaining, some lapped cars were allowed to pass the safety car, which does not comply with the rules of the F1 sport.

“This gave rival opponent Max Verstappen the opportunity to overtake Lewis Hamilton and win the Grand Prix. If you are an advocate of justice, honesty and fairness, please sign this petition. Leaving this decision as it stands will send a very wrong message to youngsters and future racers.”

However, to reiterate his point, Needell highlighted that the 1958 world championship was never changed in Stirling Moss’s favour. Mike Hawthorn was removed from the race result in Portugal but Moss called out the decision and his main rival was reinstated.

Moss went on to lose the championship and never got his hands on the title. Needell told Express Sport: “Otherwise let’s go back to 1958 with Stirling Moss.

Mike Hawthorn should have been disqualified in 1958 but because Stirling defended him with the stewards after the race in Portugal he got back in the race again.”
