Unveiling the Mysteries: A Review of ‘No Escape Room’ – A Journey Through Terrors

No Escape Room thrilling review

A father and daughter who are distant from each other decide to take part in a horror-themed Escape Room during a road trip. However, the interactive experience becomes alarmingly realistic, pushing them to urgently search for a way out.

Each of these Escape Room movies begins similarly, showcasing very unlikable characters. It’s crucial to emphasize that these characters are not destined for the typical fate of characters in slasher movies; instead, they are designed to be relatable and worth rooting for. They should evoke emotional connections from the audience. The teenage lead, Karen (portrayed by Ross), comes across as a spoiled and irritating individual, while her father, Michael (acted by Ghanimé), is attempting to mend their relationship. As someone who may resonate with the role of a teacher, I find this type of behavior quite irksome.

When their car breaks down in a small American town with limited entertainment options, they decide to explore a local Escape Room located in a nearby mansion. Unlike preceding films in this genre, the participants are strangers, each with their unique motives for being there, coincidentally grouped for the same session. Melanie (played by Davis) is celebrating her birthday and has convinced her grumpy boyfriend, Tyler (played by Haq), to accompany her. Andrew (portrayed by Andres) claims his therapist recommended engaging in collaborative group activities. This approach to introducing the characters allows for a more authentic revelation of their personalities, in contrast to the clichéd dinner scenes found in other Escape Room movies.

one must acknowledge that, out of the recent Escape Room films we’ve viewed, this one appears to offer the most enjoyable experience. It presents a complex sequence of puzzles with clever solutions and an engaging backstory that weaves everything together. It guarantees an entertaining encounter, albeit without the unsettling elements, naturally. The characters are welcomed by a host who stays in character, serving them chai tea and narrating the peculiar occurrences within the mansion, where an inventor conducted strange experiments that led to the disappearance of five individuals. An old-fashioned film further contributes to the eerie ambiance, and the unsettling presence of antiquated surgical equipment is constantly felt. Once inside the Escape Room, some characters casually explore, while others actively hunt for clues. While not deeply developed, these characters feel genuine.

There are several aspects of this movie that we find praiseworthy. The concept of a haunted house as a component of a mechanism for contacting the deceased aligns well with the Escape Room motif. Familiar elements like shifting scenery, time loops, and distorted spatial arrangements are deftly incorporated. It’s evident that inspiration has been drawn from “House on Haunted Hill,” adding an element of uncertainty regarding whether the events are authentic or an intricate setup, which enhances the intrigue.

Thus far, the review remains predominantly positive, but the final assessment will be somewhat average. This is partly because the film is being juxtaposed with Escape Room movies from 2017, making anything newer appear superior. Additionally, a few concerns cannot be dismissed. The film lacks sufficient material and set pieces to sustain its runtime, resulting in repetitive sequences. Even with the inclusion of time loops, the repetition becomes tedious. Furthermore, the ending is somewhat ambiguous. While leaving certain mysteries unresolved is acceptable, this movie leaves too many loose ends, failing to offer viewers enough substance to formulate their own interpretations. The conclusion feels sudden, which is disappointing given the film’s strengths.
