Taco Tuesdays have entered a new era.

From August 15 through September 5, Taco Bell will give away free Doritos Locos Tacos once a week.

Fast food company is handing out free tacos in honor of the trademark expiration of the term “Taco Tuesday.” Taco John’s, based in Wyoming, has owned the trademark on the phrase since 1989.

After Taco Bell petitioned the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel Taco John’s trademark in May, Taco John’s conceded.

Taco Tuesday was created by Taco Bell because “tacos have the unique ability to bring people together and bring joy to people’s lives,” the company said. “But since 1989, ‘Taco Tuesday’ has been registered as a trademark, presenting potential legal ramifications for individuals who desire to utilize the phrase. And that’s totally not acceptable.

Taco Bell has wasted no time capitalizing on the trademark’s elimination everywhere but New Jersey by giving away one of its most popular menu items.

How to get free tacos

Simply asking for a free Doritos Locos Taco at any of the 49 participating Taco Bell locations is all it takes to get one. No purchase is essential, however only one per person will be allowed.

You’ll need to enter a new code every day if you prefer to preorder through the Taco Bell IOS or Android app or website. The codes are as follows:

Aug. 15: 01TACOTUESDAY

Aug. 22: 02TACOTUESDAY

Aug. 29: 03TACOTUESDAY

Sept. 5: 04TACOTUESDAY

According to Taylor Montgomery, CMO of Taco Bell, “when tacos win, we all win.”

He said that everyone would benefit from Taco John’s deciding to cancel its trademark registration, from other taco sellers having the opportunity to join the movement, and from taco enthusiasts being able to freely celebrate and support Taco Tuesdays at Taco Bell or anywhere else.
