Celebrate National Ice Cream Day with Freebies and Discounts at Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queen, and More!

While many of us don’t need a designated day to express our undying love for Ice Cream, President Ronald Reagan apparently did in 1984. Because, as he put it, “Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over 90% of the people in the United States,” he declared July to be National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July to be National Ice Cream Day. It’s often regarded as the consummate sweet treat and tasty munchie.

No argument there. You can never have too much ice cream. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the average American consumes four gallons of ice cream each year, or 20 pounds.

National Ice Cream Month: We’re spending more on ice cream, but getting less

According to Circana, previously IRI and The NPD Group, ice cream sales in the United States increased 17%, reaching $8 billion, in the year of the 2020 pandemic, with increases seen across all retail channels. In 2022, sales increased by 5% after falling by 6.7% the year before.

However, it appears that we are once again indulging ourselves, as ice cream sales over the past 52 weeks have increased by 8% to over $8.1 billion. However, it appears that we are paying more and getting less, as unit sales have decreased by 3.2%, likely due to inflation.

And now there are more options than ever before; Baskin Robbins, formerly known for only 31 varieties, has developed more than 1,400. According to retail data tracker 84.51°, vanilla ice cream is still the most popular when purchased in bulk rather than by the pint. Chocolate and Neapolitan are two close seconds. Ice cream flavored like birthday cakes is becoming more popular.

In addition to being the popular flavor in 21 different states, vanilla ice cream accounted for 30% of all ice cream purchases through Instacart between June 2022 and May 2023. Fifteen of the states like chocolate.

In a statement accompanying the ice cream statistics, Instacart’s trends specialist Laurentia Romaniuk explained that vanilla’s popularity stems from the flavor’s adaptability. She went on to say that vanilla ice cream’s “luscious flavor effortlessly enhances a variety of desserts,” whether that be in the form of a chocolate sundae, a slice of pie or cobbler, or enjoyed on its own with a delicious sprinkle topping.
