This weekend, you can’t avoid the downtown gathering. You may be in the West Loop and still hear the races and qualifying on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue, and Grant Park. The main event, a Cup Series race, will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 2. broadcast live on NBC 5 Chicago and online at Peacock. The Black Crowes (Saturday, 2:30 pm), The Chainsmokers (Saturday, 7 pm), and Miranda Lambert (Sunday, 1:30 pm) will all be performing live.

Independence Weekend Fireworks at Navy Pier

It’s true that Navy Pier hosts fireworks shows every Wednesday and Saturday night between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but this particular spectacle is reserved for the Fourth of July. The Chicago metropolitan area is home to a plethora of more fireworks shows.

You’ll have to make it to Rosemont this weekend to hear the original, as the lyric “… Was the summer of ’23′′ doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue. Adams and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will be travelling in support of Adams’ next studio album, “So Happy It Hurts,” due out in 2022.

4th on 53rd Parade, Festival and Concert

There will be marching bands, floats, community groups, and kids on painted bikes in this Hyde Park parade that travels west on 53rd Street. Then, there will be a free Festival featuring music, games, bouncy houses, face painting, a petting zoo, and a magician at Nichols Park. The Kenwood School of Ballet, Hyde Park Hot Seven, and the Hyde Park Youth Symphony will all be performing.

Nichols Park, 1355 E. 53rd St., will host a parade at 11 a.m. and a festival from noon to 3 p.m. on July 4; both are free and more details can be found at 4thon53rdparade.com.

African/Caribbean International Festival of Life

This year marks the 30th year of the festival’s celebration of Jamaican, Caribbean, African, and American performers. The festival will coincide with the Jerk Festival, the Seafood Festival, and the Vegan Festival. Roody Roodboy, Heatwave, Rich Homie Quan, and Capleton & The Prophecy Band will all be performing as headliners. Food, games, and DIY activities will also be available.

Cypress Hill

The trio of B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs released their self-titled first album in 1991, followed by the critically praised “Black Sunday” in 1993. The band is still active, both in the studio and on the road; at the Hard Rock, they were joined by DJ Metro.

American Music Festival

This weekend marks the 40th annual American Music Festival, which will be held at FitzGerald’s on the boundary of Berwyn and Oak Park. Performers such as singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams will set the tone for a weekend full of music from bands like Dave Alvin, Steve Earle, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Rooftop Cinema Club

The Rooftop Cinema Club in Fulton Market has a full schedule of movies playing on their 24-foot LED screen on the roof of the Emily Hotel as we enter the open-air movie season in Chicago. This weekend’s releases include “Goodfellas,” “Lady Bird,” “Monsters, Inc.” and, naturally, “Independence Day.” Family-friendly films are shown earlier in the day; 18+ screenings are held after 4:30 p.m. Take the elevator to the sixth story, where there is a cinema entrance.
