How Often Should Water Filters be Replaced?

Even though it is a small part, the water Filter core plays a very important role in the water filtration process of the machine, which is why you need to replace the water filter core regularly. However, how often to replace the water filter core is still a question that many people wonder about.

What is a water filter core?

This is a fairly important component of the water purifier, with a cylindrical shape, both ends are usually the same length, or one end is in the form of an oring (O-ring) while the other end is round or pointed.

In which, the oring end has the function of sealing air and oil, usually made of rubber material with a round O-shaped cross section. The cylindrical bar is more commonly used, especially in the food, pharmaceutical, chemical industries…

The material of the water filter core varies depending on the needs and uses, such as filter cores made from activated charcoal, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE).

Each filter core has its own specific task, combined together to form a continuous filtration system. The input water is circulated through each filtration stage, so that the final output water has a purity of up to 99.9%, clean and bacteria-free.

How often to replace the water filter core?

Replacing the water filter core regularly and checking it regularly is necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the machine as well as the quality of the output water.

So how often to replace the water filter core? The current water filtration systems often have different filter cores in terms of lifespan and function, so the replacement time also varies.

Water filter core number 1

This is the filter element for the raw input water, with a short replacement period, requiring attention to cleaning and frequent replacement.

Filter elements number 1, 2, 3 directly contact the raw input water (containing many large and small impurities, dirt) so they are prone to dirt, blockages, damage. Normally, after about 3-6 months of use, equivalent to filtering 18,000 litres of water, you should replace filter element number 1.

If the input water is tap water, this filter will have a lifespan of about 4 months. With well water, this period is shortened to only 2-3 months of use.

Water filter core number 2

This is an activated carbon filter element, which has the function of absorbing odors, organic substances, heavy metals, and chlorine in the raw input water. How often to replace this water filter core? The answer is about 6-9 months, equivalent to filtering 27,000 litres of water. In the case of tap water, after 8 months, you need to replace filter element number 2, while if your family uses well water, this period is only 5-6 months.

Water filter core number 3

This filter element is made from PP fibers creating a 1-micrometer gap, so it has the ability to filter out larger or equal-sized impurities and other components in the water. Any impurities and dirt that pass through this filter membrane are retained.

The replacement time for water filter core number 3 is 9-12 months, equivalent to filtering 36,000 litres of water. With tap water, the lifespan of this filter cartridge is about 10 months, while with well water it is about 7-8 months.

Water filter core number 4 – RO membrane

The RO membrane is considered the most important part of the water purifier, which removes heavy metal contaminants and toxins that increase the risk of cancer, digestive diseases, or nerve inflammation.

Water filter core number 4 has a longer lifespan than other filter elements. In order to ensure that the post-filter water always meets the standards, the manufacturer recommends replacing the RO membrane every 24 – 36 months. Replace it 2 years/ time if the input water is tap water or 1-1.5 years/time for well water. The cost of replacing the RO membrane is higher than the coarse filter elements 1, 2, 3.

How often to replace the water filter core? It depends on each type of filter element.

Functional filter elements

Each brand of water purifiers will have specific functional filter elements. The functional filter elements of Kangaroo include silver nano filters to remove chlorine odors, ceramic ball filters to increase oxygen levels in water, alkaline filters to create alkaline water, and maifan filters to supplement minerals.

The functional filter elements of Karofi include alkaline filter elements, silver nano elements, mineral stone elements, infrared elements, T33-GAC elements, and additional UV lamps.

The replacement time for functional water filter elements ranges from 12 to 24 months depending on the quality of the input water, the amount of daily water use, and the type of filter membrane.

The consequences of not replacing the water filter core

Using filter elements for too long will lead to the following consequences:

– Impurities in filtered water: The filter element’s task is to absorb and prevent impurities. If you do not replace the filter elements regularly, the filter system will accumulate harmful bacteria present in the water. The flowing water will not be properly filtered and can cause diseases of the digestive tract, lungs, skin…

– Significant reduction in water flow: Prolonged use of filter elements will cause dirt to accumulate, leading to clogged filter membranes, making it difficult for water to flow out. The water flow is hindered, causing the water supply to gradually decrease and not meet the necessary demand for use.

– Reduced lifespan of the machine: The expired water filter elements can affect the function and efficiency of the filtration. Moreover, it also affects the lifespan of other filter elements that have not yet reached the replacement period. The water filter core and other components in the machine have a close connection; infrequent replacement of the water filter core can cause clogging of the filter membrane, affecting the water pumping ability and can lead to electrical shorts. The lifespan of the water purifier will be reduced.

– Wasted costs: Not replacing the water filter elements regularly can affect the function, filtration efficiency, causing breakdowns, electrical shorts, and increased repair or replacement costs.
