Following a Lunar New Year event that was attended by thousands of people, a mass shooting occurred late Saturday night in a community east of Los Angeles, leaving ten people dead, according to police.

Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reports that the gunshot was reported at 10:22 p.m. at a business on Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park. Boese reported early on Sunday that the shooter is a male.

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, Captain Andrew Meyers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies had responded to emergency calls and saw people swarming out of the building.

The officers arrived at the scene and discovered more victims, he claimed.

“The Monterey Park Police Fire Department arrived on the scene, treated the victims’ wounds, and declared 10 of them dead there.

“At least 10 other victims have been sent to a number of nearby hospitals where they are listed in a range of states, from stable to critical. The culprit eluded capture and is still at large.

Numerous police officers responded to reports of the shooting, but for several hours, no information was given by authorities.

Seung Won Choi, the proprietor of the Clam House seafood BBQ restaurant opposite from the gunshot scene, told the Los Angeles Times that three people forced their way in and urged him to close the door.

The witnesses reportedly told Choi that there was a shooter with a machine gun who was bringing along a quantity of rounds so he could reload.

The two-day festival, one of the biggest Lunar New Year celebrations in Southern California, began on Saturday.
