By David Ogunlade

On Thursday, 22nd February, 2023, it was reported that Operatives of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Police Force  raided and arrested some students of Kwara State University, Malete.

Prior to this, Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 48 students of the Kwara State University and two others for offences bordering on internet fraud on Wednesday night.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, made this statement known on Thursday.

The current situation at Kwara State University (KWASU) is marked by various events. Recently, there have been reports of alleged raids and arrests of students by the EFCC and NDLEA. Additionally, there are ongoing issues and crises affecting the university, as indicated by various news sources.

In recent videos sighted on X(formerly Twitter) it has been seen how some students are being beaten, year gas all over and there has been a record of death caused by the operatives.

Speaking with Mercy, a student of the University, she said, “ What is the problem of these people, they were here yesterday and now again today and this is totally against their ethics. I just pray the federal government will look into this unlawful action”.

You must recall that in November,EFCC operatives had invaded the off-campus hostels of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; following this, the EFCC chairman placed a ban on sting operations at night following the outrage that ensued after operatives arrested suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

For the most recent and detailed information, it is advisable to refer to the official statements from the university or reliable news sources.

The Management of Kwara State University has issued a disclaimer notice to the general public  regarding the recent unrest in Malete. The statement assures students and staff that peace has been restored to the community and urges everyone to remain calm and lawful.

Contrary to reports on social media, no one was shot, and no lives were lost during the unrest. The Management has been liaising with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) regarding the arbitrary sting operations on the student body. The Management does not condone the rough handling of bona fide students and urges students to uphold peaceful and orderly conduct.

The Harmattan semester examinations that are currently ongoing will continue as scheduled. The Management is committed to providing a safe and enabling environment for students to learn, develop, and graduate within the stipulated time frame.

The Management urges all students to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear. The statement was signed by Dr. Kikelomo W. Sallee, the Registrar of Kwara State University.
