Nissan Ariya EV spotted in India

Images of the Nissan Ariya EV on Indian roads have surfaced online, and Nissan has likely brought the all-electric SUV here for evaluation purposes. The Ariya was globally revealed back in July 2020, and sits above Nissan’s hugely successful Leaf EV hatchback. In international markets, the Nissan Ariya takes on premium crossovers like the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, both of which are already on sale in India.

It remains to be seen if Nissan would bring the Ariya to India as it hasn’t explicitly mentioned any plans for launching the SUV here.

Nissan Ariya EV: design, features

The Ariya EV takes its design inspiration from the concept of the same name first shown at the Tokyo Motor show in 2019. The production model was revealed in 2020 and is based on Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi’s CMF-EV electric architecture.

The Nissan Ariya features the new ‘design’ shield, and in some markets, it gets an illuminated Nissan logo. It gets a distinct coupe-like design with a prominent shoulder-line linking the front and rear of the car. The electric SUV sits on either 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, with the latter giving it a lot of road presence.

On the inside, the Nissan features a clean look with large 12.3-inch screens dominating the dashboard. Nissan has done away with most physical buttons, replacing them with haptic controls. Stand-out features include Bose's premium sound system and a large head-up display.

It gets advanced driver assistance features, including an enhanced version of Nissan’s ProPilot system. Tested in 2022, the Ariya was awarded a full five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP.

Nissan Ariya has a range of up to 529km

Nissan offers the Ariya with both single-motor, rear-wheel-drive and twin-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrains and two battery pack options – 63kWh and 87kWh. The 63kWh battery pack makes 217hp and 300Nm of torque, and has a claimed range of 402km. The 87kWh model makes 242hp and 300Nm and has a claimed range of up to 529km. The top-spec 87kWh Ariya makes 306hp and 600Nm of torque, while offering a claimed range of up to 513km.

Will Nissan Ariya come to India?

Though Nissan has several new SUVs and EVs planned for the Indian market, it hasn't confirmed if the Ariya EV will be one of its upcoming launches.

Nissan and its alliance partner Renault recently announced a new investment of Rs 5,300 crore in the Indian market. The investment will mainly be to launch six new, locally produced cars and SUVs equally divided between the two brands. Nissan will launch two made-for-India SUVs and an entry-level EV from 2025 onwards. Meanwhile, the carmaker is also considering its derivative of the Renault Triber MPV.

While the India-spec SUVs and EVs are still some time away, Nissan will keep its portfolio fresh with CBU SUVs that were showcased in October 2022. Out of these, the X-Trail is confirmed for launch, while the Qashqai and Juke are being evaluated.
