At the honoring of the late Wigwe in Lagos, Dangote made this announcement during the celebration of his professional accomplishment.
On February 9, 2024, Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and their child perished in the United States of America when the Airbus Helicopter EC130B4 they were traveling in crashed in a border town between California and Nevada.
"I will always be indebted to Herbert Wigwe for helping me finish my tasks. He was unparalleled, according to Dangote.
"He will always be my brother, friend, and mentee.”
Atedo Peterside, an investment banker and entrepreneur from Nigeria, said to some journalists just after the event, "I don't believe any two individuals are the same." Everybody has a unique destiny. I believe Herbert has a special destiny. He was a visionary, a banker, a philanthropist, and a man of extraordinary talent and enthusiasm. It is uncommon to find someone with his level of intensity. It's in his DNA to multitask. We shall miss him and we love him.
The Lagos State governor, Sanwo-Olu, declared that the state would take action to honor the late Wigwe.
He mentioned that the first person to kindly support his ambition was Herbert Wigwe.
The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Adesina Akinwunmi, honored Herbert Wigwe by recognizing his noteworthy accomplishments that have elevated Africa—not just Nigeria—to a position of pride.
Akinwunmi claims that Wigwe is the embodiment of vision, imagination, courage, persistence, and a remarkable drive for perfection. As if Wigwe could convert anything he touched into gold, every project he took on ended in success.
Wigwe is widely recognized as the embodiment of the classic banker, valued for his steadfast devotion and his capacity to manage assets that generate returns for investors. His unrelenting quest for greatness acts as a ray of hope and courage for colleagues in the field. Akinwunmi concluded by confirming Wigwe's legitimacy as a bankable individual, matched by the prosperity and dependability of Access Bank under his direction.
Yemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said, “today, we gather to honour the life and legacy of a truly exceptional individual. Herbert passing on February 9, 2024 was a sudden and profound loss. Yet as we come to terms with this loss, it is important that we celebrate the life of a man who dedicated himself to excellence and service.
Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, an entrepreneur and founder of Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation said, “Herbert was committed to building an African continent where men and women can live to their own potential.
