Unbelievable: Iran Secure Important Position In UN Human Rights Counc Despite Human Rights Abuse Allegations

Despite unfair trials, gross human rights violations and summary executions on the rise in Iran since December, when the first execution linked to women's rights protests erupted after the death of 22-year-old Masha Amini who went into coma and subsequently died after tortured by the Iranian Morale Police for not wearing the hijab properly.

Iran has been given an important role in the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday. Iran will chair next year's Human Rights Council social forum, which will focus on how technology can be used to advance human rights.

The announcement also came days after Iran executed two men, Yousef Mehrad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare, who were executed in Arak prison in central Iran on Monday after they were arrested in May 2020 for blasphemy. It is recalled that the two men participated in a speech on a group on Telegram channel entitled "Criticism of superstition and religion".

The authorities had accused the two men of making derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad. But according to the Iranian human rights group in Oslo, it was unclear whether the two men actually committed the alleged crime as they failed to find evidence to back up the authorities' claims.

In March 2023, Iranian authorities reportedly admitted that at least 22,000 people were arrested during the months of protests following the death of Masha Amini, with hundreds killed and dozens sentenced to death. Iran has been a leading Arab country that had been accused of committing numerous human rights violations, including:

1. Torture and mistreatment of prisoners: Iranian authorities have been accused of subjecting political prisoners and dissidents to torture, including beatings, electric shocks, and waterboarding.

2. Executions: Iran has one of the highest rates of execution in the world, with thousands of people executed each year, many of them for drug-related offenses. Iran also executes individuals for political and religious dissent, including members of minority groups.

3. Suppression of free speech: Iran restricts freedom of expression, including press freedom and online speech. Journalists and bloggers who criticize the government or express dissenting views are often arrested and imprisoned.

4. Discrimination against women: Women in Iran face discrimination in areas such as employment, education, and the legal system. They are required to cover their hair and body in public and are often subject to harassment and violence.

5. Persecution of religious minorities: Iran’s constitution recognizes Islam as the official religion of the country and limits the political and social rights of religious minorities, including Christians, Baha’is, and Jews.

These human rights violations have been documented by international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. The Iranian government has denied many of these allegations, arguing that they are part of a Western propaganda campaign against Iran.
