Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), Tao Nan School at Armenian Street
Encounter the world of the Peranakans – a unique culture forged amongst Chinese, Malay and Europeans – at ACM, Armenian Street. First opened in 1997, ACM, Armenian Street occupies the former Tao Nan school and boasts of one of Asia’s best Peranakan collection.
A Malay term meaning ‘locally born’, the Peranakans are Chinese, Indian and Eurasian communities long established in Southeast Asia. On display are fine collections of Peranakan silver, porcelain and jewellery and a re-creation of a monumental altar from the mansion of one of the wealthiest Peranakan families in Singapore.

Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), Empress Place
Opened on 2 March 2003, ACM, Empress Place is Singapore’s largest and most spectacular museum. Occupying 14,000 square metres in the immaculately restored 135-year old Empress Place building, the museum boasts of more than 1,300 artefacts from across Asia.
Discover Singapore’s rich ancestral cultures and experience 5,000 years of Asian history and art. Marvel at the splendour of ancient and modern Asia with 11 thematic galleries, covering the breadth of China, Southeast Asia and West Asia. State-of-the-art interactive hosts, multi-media displays and interactive zones help provide a memorable experience for the senses.
Reflections at Bukit Chandu (RBC), 31K Pepys Road S
RBC is a World War II Interpretative Centre housed in a restored colonial house. Set in lush green surroundings amidst the picturesque Pasir Panjang area, it tells of the Battle of Pasir Panjang on 14 February 1942 where 1,400 brave and valiant soldiers from the Malay Regiment chose death to fight against 13,000 Japanese soldiers.
RBC is not just another World War II Centre. It is also a place for people to reflect on Singapore’s heritage of heroism, and the deeds of people who valued honour, courage and dedication above their own lives. The realistic presentations of war through artefacts, multi-media shows and exhibits invite one to contemplate and ponder the horrors of war and the peace that Singapore now enjoys.
Singapore Art Museum (SAM), 71 Bras Basah Road
Dedicated to 20th-century Singapore and Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art, SAM is one of the first with international standard museum facilities and programmes in Southeast Asia. With more than 6,000 art works, it possesses the largest permanent collection of 20th century Southeast Asian contemporary art world-wide.
Housed in the former St. Joseph Institution, SAM has gained a credible standing both regionally and internationally. In its first year of establishment, the Museum brought in several international shows including Leonardo da Vinci: Scientist-Inventor-Artist, Tryst With Destiny : Art In Independent India, German Art :1960s To 1970s, The Origins Of Modern Art In France and more recently, Botero in Singapore and Russel Wong : Photographs (1980-2005).
Visitors to SAM can expect to find an interactive, living centre for art, with advanced museum facilities. Its 10,000-square metre floor space includes 14 full climate-controlled galleries, a reference library, an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall, a museum shop, courtyards and a café, all together ensure a quality experience for visitors.
Singapore History Museum (SHM), Stamford Road
Singapore’s fascinating history over the last 700 years is told in vivid fashion by SHM. It traces our origins – how we were transformed from a humble fishing village to a global cosmopolitan city. SHM also chronicles the lifestyle of Singapore’s forefathers and its political struggle for independence on the road to nation building.
Formerly known as the NationalMuseum until 1993 when it came under the National Heritage Board, SHM’s permanent museum at Stamford Road is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment and will be closed for renovations until 2006. When opened, the new museum will be two-and-a-half times larger, and boast of exciting new exhibitions, cafes, restaurants, and a resource centre.
During the interim period, SHM has launched the exhibition Rivertales at Riverside Point. Rivertales explores the history of Singapore through timeless tales woven around the SingaporeRiver. Its highlights include “Singapore River Mystery Game” and a beautiful short film The Old Man and The River by acclaimed director Royston Tan.
Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM), 23B Coleman Street
The Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) is Singapore’s only museum devoted to philately. It promotes the appreciation of Singapore’s philatelic materials.
Besides its permanent exhibitions, the museum features thematic galleries that cover a wide-range of interesting current topics. These include displays from the private collections of renowned philatelists, travelling exhibitions from overseas and commemorative exhibitions for new stamp issues.
