When first planning to visit a country, you need to do your research and an important aspect of how to conduct your travel research for a specific destination includes understanding whether you need a visa and what are the specific passport requirements for a UK traveller.
Depending on the specific destination you are visiting you may need a visa in addition to your passport. Visa requirements vary from country to country and it is essential to check whether your next holiday destination requires you to have one or not.
We recommend looking for the verified government website for that specific destination or alternatively looking for an official embassy website for the country you are from to that destination. For example, if I wanted to travel to Spain, I could search the British Embassy website for travellers in Spain.
The best way to check if your passport is valid to travel to a certain destination is by using the travel advice section of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) website. You next want to select the country you are visiting and click on “entry requirements”. From here scroll down to “passport validity” and you will find official and accurate information regarding what passport requirements you need for the country you are visiting. It is quick, easy and free and only takes one Google search to find the website and a few minutes to read it, yet the benefits can save you major headaches down the road.
We highly recommend that you prioritise this stage and ensure you have a clear understanding of the passport and visa requirements for the destination you are travelling on holiday to.
Check you have a valid passport
Simply put, if your passport is invalid you won’t even make it onto the plane let alone into another country. The validity of a passport is something a lot of travellers forget and if you don’t realise that it is out of date, you will be refused entry to board the flight. This is a major problem people usually forget about and can cost them time, money and most importantly days of their holiday by simply not completing a basic admin task.
Before you even plan on booking a plane ticket, ensure that your passport is not going to expire. The passport should be valid for the entirety of your trip and at least six months after your intended departure from your home country. If this is not the case, you will be refused entry to board the plane in the UK and thus your holiday will not be able to take place.
In order to know whether you need to renew and revalidate your passport, you need to understand where to find the expiry date. On UK passports this is located on the front page, under the section labelled “passport issued”. The date indicated in this section will tell you when the passport is no longer valid for travel. If your passport is shown not to be valid you will need to apply for a new passport. This process can take a couple of months and requires you to send off your old passport in return for a new one.
You need to book a passport office appointment and pay online to get a new UK passport. You can book appointments three weeks in advance and begin the renewal procedure.

As someone with a UK passport, you will be all too familiar with Brexit and what that means for UK travellers. Prior to Brexit, UK citizens could travel freely within the European Union using a valid passport. However as mentioned previously, UK passports are now required to have at least six months of validation before the day of arrival in an EU country.
This means that if your passport is going to expire six months before you visit a specific EU destination you will need to get your passport renewed otherwise you will be refused entry into the EU destination and your holiday could be ruined!

Thus if the worst does occur and you lose your actual passport, you will not be in as big trouble as you would be if you only brought your passport with you. We recommend keeping these photocopies in a special compartment that is in a safe place within your luggage so if the worse does come, they are guaranteed to be untouched and safe in that compartment.

Once you have double and triple checked it is all in line, you can get ready to jet off to your dream holiday location without a worry in the world! Just remember, after all this planning don’t forget your passport when you get to the airport!
