midst the rising competition in the compact SUV segment, several carmakers have entered or are making more entries in the concerned segment. One of the key players that regained sales traction in the Indian four-wheeler market is the Volkswagen Group. Before launching the MQB-A0-IN-based vehicles, their sales started declining because other carmakers were evolving with time, while Volkswagen India lagged.
Fast-forwarding to 2021, the VW group commenced the India 2.0 project with their first offering, the Skoda Kushaq. The Skoda Kushaq is directly related to other Volkswagen (VW) cars that are underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform. Those VW cars include the Taigun (SUV) and Virtus (sedan). So, if you are planning to buy the Skoda Kushaq, below are a few things that you should keep in mind.

Specifications

As far as the Skoda Kushaq’s specifications are concerned, this compact SUV is underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform that also platforms the Skoda Slavia (sedan), and the Volkswagen Virtus (sedan).
The engines powering the Skoda Kushaq include turbocharged petrol engines (TSI in VW’s moniker). It also powers other Skoda cars with the same or different state of tune, depending upon the model. However, there is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol mill, which is tuned to churn out 114 bhp at 5000 rpm and 178 Nm of peak torque at 4500 rpm.

On the other hand, there is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with state-of-the-art Active Cylinder Technology, which generates 148 bhp at 5000 rpm and 250 Nm of peak torque at 3500 rpm. For your reference, the Active Cylinder Technology automatically deactivates a cylinder (as per the driving condition), as a result, it delivers better fuel efficiency.

Transmission

As for the transmission, both engine options can be had with a standard six-speed manual transmission. However, the 1.0-litre engine is exclusive to the six-speed torque converter, while the 1.5-litre is exclusive to the seven-speed DSG (also known as DCT).
The MQB-AO-IN-based vehicles have a front-wheel-drive system and they don’t get an all-wheel-drive system as an option.

Apart from that, the Skoda Kushaq’s mileage ranges between 17.7 km/l and 19.76 km/l, depending upon the engine and transmission combination. All are ARAI-certified mileage figures. Please note that the real-world mileage can vary with the local traffic conditions and individuals’ driving styles.
Apart from the figures, let’s now delve into the suspension setup of this locally-produced SUV. That said, the Skoda Kushaq stands on a McPherson suspension with lower triangular links and a stabiliser at the front, alongside a twist-beam axle suspension at the rear. When you step inside the Monte Carlo 1.5-litre TSI DSG variant, you will get an auto HVAC, a vanity mirror on the sun visor (co-driver only), cabin-to-boot access (with 60:40 split seats), a dual-tone leatherette upholstery, and an auto-dimming IRVM.

It also has a reverse camera with guidance, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel (tilt and telescopic adjustment), cruise control, a 12V power outlet, USB-C type ports (front and rear), and connected car technology. The connected car technology requires the user to download the dedicated app, which allows the user to access the vehicle’s status, such as the live location, last parked location, fuel level, and upcoming service(s), to name a few.
For entertainment and other relevant information, the Skoda Kushaq can be had with a 7-inch, 8-inch or 10-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, it has a semi-digital and an optional fully digital instrument cluster. Both come with an adjustable instrument cluster brightness.

Other notable features include a wireless charger, voice command, USB ports, mono-tone ambient lighting, cabin lamps (front and rear), front-ventilated seats (cooling function only), and a single-pane electric sunroof. This SUV also boasts power windows (all), electrically adjustable ORVMs, wipers with washers (front and rear), and rain-sensing wipers.
As for exterior lighting, the Skoda Kushaq comes with LED headlights, automatic headlights, passive cornering lights, LED tail lights, LED DRLs, and halogen fog lamps. The driver also has access to adjust the height of the headlights.

Safety Features

On the safety front, VW Group vehicles have always put safety as their priority. The lower variants are equipping with dual airbags, while the higher variants have six airbags.
However, the standard safety offerings include speed-sensing door lock, child-safety lock, engine immobiliser, electronic differential lock, traction control, ESP, ABS, and EBD. It also boasts a tyre pressure monitoring system, child-seat anchorages, seat belt warnings, emergency brake light flashing, etc.
Last, but not least, all the MQB-A0-IN-based vehicles have achieved a five-star safety rating in both adult- and child-occupation protection tests. For your reference, the base variants of those vehicles were crash-test.

Prices and Variants

The Czech car manufacturer offers the Skoda Kushaq in three trims: Active, Ambition and Style. In addition, the base variant, the Active has an “Onyx” edition, while the top variant has “Monte Carlo” and “Matte” editions. There is also an Onyx+ variant. Further, it has a total of twenty-four variants.
As for the Skoda Kushaq’s base variant price starts at Rs 11.59 lakh and and goes up to Rs 19.69 lakh for the top variant, the 1.5 TSI Monte Carlo DSG.
