Durga Puja Carnival 2023: Dates, Timings, & What to Expect

The Durga Puja Carnival this year is anticipated to be a remarkable occasion that will captivate guests. This year’s, carnival is scheduled on October 24th, 2023. The festivities often begin in the evening with an energetic parade of magnificently created Maa Durga idols. The Red Road comes alive, as the sun sets, with breathtaking light shows, traditional dance performances, and much more.


Typically, the Durga Puja Carnival starts at 5:00 PM and lasts well into the night. However, as the timings sometimes vary significantly, it’s a good idea to arrive a little early to secure a good viewing spot. Families and friends gather along the Red Road to witness this great display, and the mood is electric. As you walk around the carnival, you’ll come across beautifully decorated tents, street food vendors, and stalls offering traditional handicrafts.


On this special occasion, more than 70 well-known Durga Puja committees will present an impressive display. They will screen a variety of themes and artwork on colorful portrayals. It’s a great chance to experience the native way of life, shop for gifts, and taste delicious Bengali cuisine.


Preparation of Carnival: The West Bengal Govt.

The West Bengal government has requested the Metro Railway Kolkata authorities to extend train services until midnight on October 27. This extension aims to ensure the convenience of travelers attending the 'Durga Puja Carnival' on Red Road in the city. Anticipating a significant turnout for the event, the special commissioner of the Transport Department has communicated with the general manager of the Metro Railway, urging them to keep the train services running until midnight on October 27.


Annually, the carnival features a colorful parade showcasing idols from Kolkata's most prominent Durga Pujas. In a significant development in 2021, UNESCO bestowed the Durga Puja in Kolkata with the esteemed status of Intangible Heritage. Moreover, the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) has declared its plan to extend bus services, including an additional 23 buses operating until midnight on October 27.


In addition, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Kolkata has initiated communication with various unions representing private bus, minibus, taxi, and auto-rickshaw services. Their aim is to secure a sufficient provision of public transportation, facilitating the smooth mobility of individuals during this event, as disclosed by the official sources.


Security At Kolkata Durga Puja Carnival

Since, the Kolkata Durga Puja Carnival is an important event, and to ensure its smooth execution, the official authorities deploy approximately 2500 police personnel and 1200 firefighters in the area. Joint Commissioner Shubhankar Sarkar also conducts meetings with the Puja committees to address any potential issues and ensure the event's success.


Certain guidelines have been established for the Puja committees: each committee is limited to decorating only three tableaux and presenting their program for a maximum of 3 minutes. Additionally, the entry of participants is capped at 50 individuals for each Puja, and the height of the Durga Idol cannot exceed 16 feet.
