Lagos State FA Chairman Accused of Assaulting Vice Chairman During Suspension Meeting

The Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Hon. Fouad Oki, is facing serious allegations after being accused of assaulting his vice chairman, Olawale Gafar, during a heated meeting where Oki was suspended for gross misconduct. The decision to suspend Oki was reached by a narrow 5-4 majority vote, citing alleged misconduct and high-handedness following a meeting at the Secretariat in Surulere on Tuesday, October 17.

During the tumultuous meeting, Oki was accused of a range of offenses that violated the rules and regulations of the Nigeria Football Federation. These alleged infractions included failing to attend the NFF Congress without excuse, changing the association's logo without Board approval and congressional consent, denying access to test-run the A1 camera to Nigerian Professional League A1 Camera delegates, and disregarding NFF instructions on NPFL rules and regulations. The LSFA Board also claimed Oki had released match day logistics for the 2023/24 NNL season to NNL clubs without board knowledge, delayed and halted youth tournaments and recreational football, and threatened teams to move out of Lagos.

Furthermore, the board accused Oki of initiating the independence of LSFA outside the authority of the NFF, and of having a contentious relationship with the Lagos State Sports Commission concerning the use of facilities.

A video circulating online showed Olawale Gafar visibly upset, lamenting the alleged assault and announcing Oki's suspension. "Chairman, you slapped me and punched me in my throat. The oppression is over, the board is suspending you unanimously,” Gafar stated.

Speaking to journalists afterward, Gafar emphasized that the suspension was intended to correct Oki's actions and restore order within the organization. He explained that they had formed a quorum and voted on the suspension, although the normal procedure would be to call a congress for a fair hearing.
