Moving beyond SMART Goals

Since researching and studying goal Setting one of the most talked about methods is SMART Goals. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely, and for some that can absolutely work but for others like myself, it simply falls short on the emotional aspects.

Think about it, do you really just want to set goals that are merely “attainable” and “realistic” or do you want to dream big where your imagination fuels the ideas of a 3-day workweek, traveling adventures, and enough financial resources to do what your heart desires? I don’t believe that the method of setting SMART goals won’t take you there.

For me, having an attainable goal always feels so meh, consider that if you were to increase your earnings by 10% compared to the year before, you might put in 10% more effort, invest 10% more in advertising or product development, and reach out to 10% more potential clients. And yes, you’ll probably earn about 10% more. Which at the end of the day, may not be a bad goal, right?

But I don’t know about you, working harder doesn’t really appeal to me. Or maybe you unwittingly placed a subconscious cap on your earning potential that you find impossible to shatter?

I love dreaming big and over the years developed a method that includes the emotions and feelings that we want to achieve. It feels uncomfortable working out the perhaps even unattainable but we will never know if we don’t try, right? I’m not one that loves to settle for that 10% and want to stretch myself, exploring different ways to accomplish my goals.

Of course, you can’t just declare goals and expect the universe to deliver them on a silver platter because there is work to still be done but it’s more important to trust yourself beyond self-imposed constraints and strive for the unreachable and have fun working towards the once believed impossible.

I’m a big fan of defying limitations, and establishing colossal, audacious goals. Even if you stumble, you’ll find yourself significantly farther ahead than you ever would have with those conventional SMART goals.
