The Importance of Be Yourself in the Creative Process

How hard is it for you to be yourself? I mean let’s be honest, you and I are constantly bombarded with images and messages that tell us what we should look like, act like, and think like. And sometimes, it can be easier to just conform but at a cost.

Authenticity is about being true to yourself, even when it’s not easy. It’s about embracing your uniqueness and letting your true self shine through. When you are Authentic, you are more likely to be happy and fulfilled. You are also more likely to connect with others on a deeper level.

For years, and I mean years, I struggled to just be who I am because my entire life consisted of being judged for my opinions, the moles on my face, the way I dressed, my spiritual beliefs, my queerness, my quirkiness, my European ways of thinking, and I could go on and on about that.

In the Creative process, authenticity is essential. When you are true to yourself, your work will be more original and engaging. You will be more likely to connect with your audience on a deeper level. I always wondered “what’s my style” when it came to my own art – and then I was I questioned why I needed a style. Why can’t I just make the art I want to make?

There are many ways to embrace authenticity in the creative process. Here are a few tips:

  • Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. What are you passionate about? What are you good at? What are you not so good at? Once you know yourself, you can start to create work that is true to your own voice.
  • Don’t be afraid to take risks. When you are authentic, you are not afraid to put yourself out there. You are willing to try new things and experiment. This can lead to some amazing results.
  • Be open to feedback. It’s important to get feedback on your work but don’t let it discourage you. Use feedback to help you grow and improve. This can be difficult if you’re neurodivergent and rejection sensitive. I frankly don’t care what people think and don’t ask for feedback due to my rejection sensitivity. I mentioned it here because it could be helpful to you!
  • Celebrate your uniqueness. Everyone is unique, and that’s what makes us special. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Embrace your own unique voice and let it shine through in your work.

Embracing authenticity is not always easy, but it is worth it. When you are true to yourself, you are more likely to be happy, fulfilled, and successful.

Here are some additional benefits of embracing authenticity in the creative process:

  • Increased productivity: When you are authentic, you are more likely to be passionate about your work, which can lead to increased productivity.
  • Improved creativity: When you are true to yourself, you are more likely to come up with original and innovative ideas.
  • Deeper connections: When you are authentic, you are more likely to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
  • Greater self-confidence: When you embrace your true self, you will feel more confident in your work and in yourself.

If you are looking to create more authentic and engaging work, I encourage you to start by embracing your own uniqueness. Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Celebrate your uniqueness and let it shine through in your work. You will be glad you
