It’s not uncommon for siblings to compete in the same sport. Over the years, we’ve seen many of them in different disciplines from athletics, basketball, soccer and rugby. The one thing that they can’t escape is the comparison that accompanies it. Who’s better?

Asamoah & Baffour Gyan
Asamoah Gyan is one of the best African footballers. He’ll mostly be remembered for his missed penalty kick at the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Uruguay. This would have sent the Black Stars to the semi-finals of the tournament. He Played in Europe for clubs like Rennes and Sunderland. Internationally, Asamoah played 109 games for Ghana. His brother Baffour also dorned the Black Stars jersey.

Arouna & Bakari Kone
Arouna Kone started his career in Ivory Coast with Rio Sport before he moved to Europe. He’s attracted other clubs like PSV, Sevilla, Levante, Wigan Athletic and Everton. The striker played 39 times for the national team.
Bakari was also part of the Ivory Coast national team and represented them 42 times. At the club level, he started out at home with ASSECS Mimmosa before he left for Qatar and later on France.

Christopher & Felix Katongo
The Katongo brothers have played much of their club football in Zambia having represented one of the biggest teams in Green Buffalos. Internationally, they’ve also been part of the Zambia national team. Felix made 68 appearances while Christopher 97.

Itumeleng & Lucky Khune
Itumeleng Khune is one of the best goalkeepers that South Africa has produced. He came through the ranks at Kaizer Chiefs, the only club he’s played for. He’s won the Premier Soccer League in South Africa and the domestic cups.
The goalie was South Africa’s first choice and played 100 games between 2008 and 2018. Lucy Khune has been in the shadows of his brother. He also played for Kaizer Chiefs but hasn’t made a significant impact like his brother.

Jerome & Kevin-Prince Boateng
The Boateng brothers don’t have the most harmonious sibling relationship. They’ve been at odds with each other because of off-the-field issues. In 2021, Jerome was found guilty of assault and Kevin-Prince said he wanted nothing to do with him.
When it comes to football, both came through the youth system in Germany. However, Kevin-Prince decided to represent Ghana, his father’s country of birth as he didn’t feel German enough. Meanwhile, Jerome played for Germany. The two faced off each other at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Jordan, Andre & Rahim Ayew
The three are the sons of former footballer Abedi Pele who played at the highest level and won some of the most prestigious trophies. Just like him, his sons have dazzled the footballing world.
Jordan and Andre Ayew began their careers at Marseille before their careers split. They’ve played for notable clubs in Europe like Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Westham United.
Internationally, both have played for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup. Rahim Ayew isn’t as prominent as Jordan and Andre. So far, he’s not played for a European team.

Kolo & Yaya Toure
The Ivorian brothers were prominent players for their clubs in England. Kolo is the older of the two. He played for Manchester City and had a long career at Arsenal. Yaya played for more clubs in England, Spain, France and Belgium but his most successful stint was at Manchester City.
The Toure brothers won numerous titles; Premier League, FA Cup, FA Community Shield, and the Football League Cup. Internationally, both represented Ivory Coast and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015.
Kalu & Ikechukwu Uche
Kalu’s footballing career has taken him to Spain, India and Turkey. He might not be on the most prominent African footballer’s list but he’s been good enough to represent Nigeria. He was part of the team that finished third at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
As for his brother Ikechukwu, he’s played in Spain for clubs like Getafe, Zaragoza, Villareal, Granada, and Malaga. He played for the national team between 2014 and 2019.

MacDonald Mariga & Victor Wanyama
The two are the most successful of their other siblings Thomas and Sylvester Wanyama. MacDonald’s move to Italian club Inter Milan in 2010 was a high point for Kenyan football. He played in the Champions League and won the trophy which made him the only Kenyan to date to lift the prestigious title.
That said, Victor Wanyama’s footballing exploits are more prominent. His move to Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur placed him above the rest of the Kenyan players. He was an influential figure in the teams. Currently, Victor plays for CF Montreal.
