Women’s sport is on the rise across Africa. While some female sports teams have always performed well, others are gradually improving. The success of females in sports has, for the most part, been punctuated by little resources and support from different governing bodies. 

Different female athletes have received contracts to further their careers abroad, a demonstration of the talent we have. Which are the most Successful Female Teams in Africa?

Nigeria Women’s National Football Team

The Super Falcons, as it’s fondly known, is the most successful female football team in Africa. The team has won an unprecedented 11 titles out of 14. Morocco defeated them in the semi-final and put an end to their dominance. 

Nonetheless, the Super Falcons qualified for their ninth FIFA Women’s World Cup. They have appeared in all nine editions since 1991 and are the only African nation with that record. The team has qualified for three Olympic Games –  2000, 2004 and 2008.

Malkia Strikers

The Kenya Women’s Volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, is one of Africa’s most successful female teams. They’ve dominated the volleyball court, won titles and they’re still at it. Malkia Strikers have won a record nine African Championships. 

This has seen them qualify for the Olympic Games three times, in 2000, 2004, and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The team has an opportunity to win a tenth title at the 2023 CAVB African Nations Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Springbok Women

The South African women’s rugby team is the best in Africa. They’ve won two Rugby Africa Women’s Cups and played in the World Cup three times. Currently, the Springbok Women are ranked 12th in the world, the highest of any African nation. The team played its first international game in 2004 against Wales.

The Proteas

The South African women’s cricket team is the best in its category in Africa. It played its first test cricket match in 1960 against England, its first One Day International (ODI) against Ireland and its first, women’s Twenty20 against New Zealand. Women’s cricket in South Africa has grown in leaps and bounds having survived the apartheid period and elevated its status to where it is today. 

The Proteas has played in 7 world cups, 8 International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Twenty20 and the ICC Women’s Championships.

South Africa Hockey Team

 The team is the most successful women’s hockey team in Africa. Currently, it sits 21st on the world ranking, the highest of any other African team. They’ve appeared in different major competitions: 

  • Five times in the Olympic Games
  • Seven times in the World Cup
  • Seven times in the Africa Cup of Nations 

The team has collected ten medals – 7 in the Africa Cup of Nations and three at the African Games.

Senegal Basketball Team

The Senegalese Women’s Basketball team is the most successful in its category in Africa. Although it lost to Nigeria in the final of the 2023 AfroWomen’s Basket tournament, historically, they have a superior record. They won a record 11 titles in the competition. The team is ranked 31st in the world. It played in the Olympics two times and the World Cup eight times.
