Football coaching in Africa has greatly improved over the years. Individual federations have implemented stringent measures to ensure that only the best candidates qualify for the top jobs. For example, coaches need to attain a Confederation of African Football (CAF) License and at least a UEFA Coaching license to work at the club and national levels.
As a result, clubs and national teams are scrambling only for the best in their quest for glory. In this list, we’ll look at some of the best football coaches in Africa.

Aliou Cisse

The Senegalese head coach has earned the respect of his country after what he achieved during his playing days. Moreover, after leading the Lions of Teranga to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations in 2022, he’s etched his name in his country’s football. Cisse was voted the CAF Awards Coach of the Year.
He was first appointed in 2015 as manager but was previously involved as a caretaker manager in 2012. Cisse has guided Senegal to the FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022. Both times, they were eliminated at the group stages.

Carlos Queiroz

Carlos Queiroz is one of the best coaches to have worked in African Football. He’s coached South Africa and Egypt. He was the last coach to help South Africa qualify for the FIFA World Cup. They did play in 2010 but they automatically qualified as hosts and thus didn’t have to go through the qualification process.
Unfortunately, he resigned in 2002 after he fell out with the South African Football Association (SAFA). After multiple stints working in Europe with clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid, Queiroz was appointed the manager of Egypt.
The Portuguese tactician led the Pharaohs to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which they lost on penalties in the final. His next task was to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They met Senegal again and lost to them on penalties which saw them miss out on a spot in the World Cup finals.
Carlos Queiroz mutually agreed with the Egyptian Football Association to have his contract terminated.

Otto Ado
The former Ghanaian footballer had a relatively successful playing career. He represented several German clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Mainz, and Hannover. In total, he played over 200 games. After his retirement, Otto transitioned to management and is building on his experience.
He’s worked at the German club Hamburger SV as head coach and as an assistant at Borussia Dortmund. In 2022, he was hired as the Ghana coach but left after the World Cup. The inexperienced manager cited his departure as his desire and his family to live in Germany.

Pitso Mosimane
Pitso Mosimane has won everything there is in club football in Africa. He’s one of the most decorated managers in South African football, having managed Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United. There he won the Nedbank and the Supa 8 tournaments, plus the highest finish in the league in second.
His time at Mamelodi Sundowns is his most successful. He won:
- The league title five times
- The Nedbank Cup twice
- The Telkom Knockout twice
- The CAF Super Cup
- CAF Champions League.
Mosimane replicated the same success when he joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Some of his individual awards include PSL Coach of the Season and CAF African Coach of the Year.

Walid Regragui
The former Moroccan footballer led Morocco to its first-ever semi-finals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He’d just taken over the team three months before the tournament. A part of the fanbase criticized his appointment. However, his achievement was beyond anyone’s imagination and he silenced his critics.
At the club level, Walid coached FUS, Al-Duhail, and Wydad AC. Winning the CAF Champions League with Wydad attracted the attention of several football administrators hence landing the Moroccan football job.
