Women’s football in Africa is gradually developing. Some of the best female footballers started their careers in their domestic leagues before they flew abroad for greener pastures. Although some Female Football Leagues aren’t popular, there’s a push from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and federations to put up proper structures in women’s football.
That said, several countries have established female football leagues, some doing better than others. These are some of the top female football leagues in Africa.

Ethiopia Women’s Premier League
The league started in 2012 and the Ethiopia Football Federation regulates it. It comprises 20 teams and the winners represent the country in the continental tournament, the CAF Women’s Champions League. The most successful team in the league is Dedebit, with four titles.
FAZ Women’s Super Division
With the rise of women’s football in Zambia, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) set up the league in 2021. Before that, four regional leagues have now turned into the second division leagues.
The first season saw 12 teams make applications to be part of the top tier. Preference was granted to clubs with structures and the ability to compete for an entire season.

Ghanaian Women’s Premier League
Before the league started in 2012, teams were involved in regional competitions. These were divided into three zones and only two teams progressed to the national finals.
This changed in 2012 when the current league was reorganised to have 16 teams divided into two zones of eight teams, each playing in the Northern and Southern zones. Hasaacas Ladies is the most successful, with four titles.
Hollywoodbets Super League
This is the top-tier women’s football league in South Africa. It goes by this name due to sponsorship reasons. It began in 2019 and is contested by 12 teams. These 12 teams are promoted from their respective provincial leagues.
Like the other two, the champion represents the country in the CAF Women’s Champions League. The most successful team is Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, who’ve won five titles.

Kenya Women’s Premier League
The Kenya Women’s Premier League was founded in 2010. It has 12 teams. The winner represents the country at the East Africa tournament that qualifies them for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The most successful club is Vihiga Queens. One of the biggest problems plaguing the Kenya Women’s League is the lack of funding. It doesn’t have sponsors, and most clubs don’t.

Nigeria Women’s Premier League
The Nigeria Women’s Premier League is one of the oldest female football leagues in Africa. It was founded at the back of the NIFFOA (Nigeria Female Football Organising Association).
Ufuoma Babes were once the team to beat. Pelican Stars came into the picture before River Angels started challenging for the title. Pelican Stars is the most successful, with eight championships.

Serengeti Lite W-Premier League
This is one of the fast-rising women’s leagues in the continent. It started in 2016 and has 12 teams. It’s called Serengeti Lite because of its partnership with Serengeti Breweries Limited.
Some of the teams in the league are supported by male football clubs like Simba Queens and Yanga Princess. It has attracted a lot of players from Kenya due to its ability to pay them well.
Women’s football leagues in Africa need much support to reach the next level. Most of the aforementioned leagues aren’t professional thus, players have to work 9 to 5 jobs to make ends meet.
