How Much Was Benni McCarthy Paid as a Footballer?
Benni McCarthy grew up in one of Cape Town’s most violent neighborhoods Hanover Park. He and his brother Jerome McCarthy played football to stay away from gangs.
Benni then joined Young Pirates, a club managed by his uncle. He then moved to Crusaders and later to Seven Stars. It was at Seven Stars that the forward began his professional football career.
He played for the club for two years (1995 to 1997). He earned R1,200 or $64.14. That said, he caught the eye and began his journey into European football.

Benni McCarthy in Europe
He joined Ajax Football Club in 1997 and played for two years. Benni was on a $80,000 monthly pay and a sign-on fee of $60,000. After netting 39 goals in 20 starts, his valuation went up and Celta Vigo bought him for $6.6 million, a huge fee at the time.
However, his form dipped, and he was loaned to Porto. Benni regained his form at the Portuguese club and was permanently signed in 2002 for $8.5 million.
After a successful time in Porto that saw him win the Champions League in 2004, he moved to the English Premier League. Blackburn Rovers forked out $2.5 million for him.
Rovers reportedly paid McCarthy $38,000. At Rovers, he played the most number of games (109) and scored 37 goals. From there, the forward moved to Westham United, where he earned $42,000 per week.
This was his last club in Europe after returning to South Africa and joining Orlando Pirates. Pirates paid McCarthy $24,000 monthly for two years.

After his footballing career, Benni became a football coach. He started at Scottish club Hibernian, went to Sint Truiden, Cape Town City and then Amazulu Football Club. At Amazulu, he reportedly earned $32,000 monthly. This made him one of the highest-paid coaches in South Africa
In 2022, he was fired at Amazulu but then landed a job with one of the most enviable clubs in football, Manchester United. Currently, he’s part of the first team coaching staff under Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag.
One of the things people have been curious about is his salary at Manchester United. According to The South African, Benni cashes in around $44,000 weekly at the Red Devils.
