1. Danai Gurira

Danai Gurira is a Zimbabwean-American actress, playwright, and activist known for her role as Michonne in “The Walking Dead.” She was born in Iowa but raised in Zimbabwe. Gurira studied psychology at Macalester College and earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. 

She’s also an accomplished playwright, with works like “Eclipsed” and “The Convert” gaining recognition. As an activist, Gurira focuses on African women’s issues and co-founded Almasi Collaborative Arts. She has received awards such as the NAACP Image Award and Tony Award nominations for her contributions.

2. Tinashe

Tinashe, born Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe on February 6, 1993, in Lexington, Kentucky, is a Zimbabwean-American singer, songwriter, and actress. She proudly embraces her African heritage and has made a name for herself in the entertainment industry.

Initially, Tinashe gained recognition as a member of the girl group The Stunners. This was before embarking on a successful solo career. Her music combines pop, R&B, and hip-hop elements, and she has released several studio albums and mixtapes that highlight her versatility as an artist. Some of her popular songs include “2 On,” “ All Hands on Deck,” and “No Drama.”

Apart from her music, Tinashe has also explored acting. She made her acting debut in the 2003 Film “Masked and Anonymous” and later appeared in the television series “Two and a Half Men.” Additionally, she has made guest appearances on various talk shows and reality TV programs, further showcasing her talents.

3. Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton is a British-Zimbabwean actress known for her successful career in film and television. Born on November 6, 1972, in London, England, she has Zimbabwean ancestry through her mother. She gained recognition in 2000 for her role in “Mission: Impossible 2” alongside Tom Cruise. 

She has appeared in notable films like “Crash,” which earned her a BAFTA Award, and “The Pursuit of Happyness” with Will Smith, showcasing her versatility in complex characters. In television, Newton made waves for her portrayal of Maeve Millay in the HBO series “Westworld” earning critical acclaim and a Primetime Emmy Award. She has also appeared in shows such as “ER” and “Rogue.”

Throughout her career, Thandie Newton has received several awards for her talent. Beyond acting, she is recognized for her advocacy work, speaking out against racism, sexism, and abuse in the entertainment industry.

4. Chipo Chung

Chipo Chung is a versatile Zimbabwean actress known for her performances on stage, television, and film. Born on February 17, 1977, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to a Chinese mother and Zimbabwean father, Chung spent her early years in Zimbabwe before pursuing her acting career in the United Kingdom.

Chung has appeared in notable roles in various TV shows and films. She gained recognition for her portrayals of Mary Magdalene in “A.D The Bible Continues” (2015) and Joan Campbell in the science fiction series “Camelot” (2011). 

She has also appeared in popular shows like “Doctor Who,” “Sherlock,” and “Into the Badlands,” displaying her talent and versatility across different genres.

In addition to her television work, Chung has an impressive theater background. She has received critical acclaim for her performances in renowned stage productions such as “The Great Game: Afghanistan” (2009) and “Macbeth” (2013), demonstrating her range and skill as an actress.

5. Tongayi Chirisa

Tongayi Chirisa is a Zimbabwean actor born on August 8, 1981, in Zimbabwe. He started his career in the entertainment industry as a musician before transitioning to acting. Chirisa is known for his roles in both television and film, showcasing his talent in various genres.

Chirisa gained international recognition for his performance as Friday in the film “Crusoe” (2008). He has also appeared in the British television series “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” (2008) and the American series “Sleepy Hollow” (2013-2017). 

Chirisa’s ability to bring depth and authenticity to his characters has made him a respected actor in the industry.

6. Sibongile Mlambo

Sibongile Mlambo is a Zimbabwean actress known for her work in film and television. She gained recognition for her role as Tamora Monroe in the series “Teen Wolf” and has appeared in various other shows such as “Lost in the West,” “Black Sails,” and “Siren.” 

Mlambo is praised for her ability to bring depth and complexity to her characters.

7. Tawanda Manyimo

Tawanda Manyimo is a Zimbabwean actor known for his work in film and theater. He started his career in Zimbabwe and later moved to Canada and the United Kingdom to pursue acting. Manyimo has showcased his versatility by appearing in various film and television productions.

In film, Manyimo is recognized for his role as Mukada in the acclaimed movie “The Sessions” (2012), alongside John Hawkes and Helen Hunt. He has also appeared in films like “The Adjustment Bureau” (2011) with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, as well as “Robert the Bruce” (2019) with Angus Macfadyen.

Beyond his film work, Manyimo has a strong theater background. He has performed in numerous stage productions in the United Kingdom and Canada, including shows at the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company. Notable theater credits for Manyimo include roles in plays such as “The Comedy of Errors” and “The Tempest.”

8. Michael Chinyamurindi

He was a Zimbabwean actor known for his role as Olaudah Equiano in the film “Amazing Grace” (2006). He began his acting career in Zimbabwe before moving to the United Kingdom.

In addition to his notable role in “Amazing Grace,” Chinyamurindi had a modest but impactful career in film and television. He appeared in the British crime drama series “The Bill” and had roles in movies such as “Shooting Dogs” (2005) and “Zimbabwe” (2008). He also performed in stage productions, including at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Unfortunately, Chinyamurindi passed away in 2018 at the age of 50. His portrayal of Olaudah Equiano and his overall contributions to the acting industry has left a lasting legacy.
