In the well-known Naqeebullah Mehsud murder case, former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwar and 17 other police personnel were found not guilty.
On January 13, 2018, Naqeebullah, a young aspirant fashion model from Waziristan, was slain in Karachi during an alleged staged encounter by Anwar. After falsely accusing them of being militants affiliated with the Taliban and ISIS, Rao and his coworkers were charged with the murder of Naqeeb and three other people.
On Monday, the court declared that the prosecution had not shown enough proof to establish that Rao Anwar and his 14 subordinate officers were responsible for the victims’ kidnapping and murder in a staged encounter. A thorough decision on the matter is still pending, though.
Anwar said that “false claims” against him had been disproven in an interview with Geo TV following the verdict.

Instead of Naqeebullah, he asserted that the victim was a wanted terrorist with the name Naseemullah. He claimed that he was a wanted militant about whom media advertisements had also been made.
The former police official responded that he still has one year of service left and that he “would like to serve Karachi” when asked if he would like to rejoin the police force.
Following the decision, Naqeebullah’s attorney Jibran Nasir stated that the victim’s family would file an appeal with the high court.
