Akpabio Identifies Key Steps Required in Nigeria to Fight Corruption

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has identified the steps that must be taken to fight corruption in Nigeria.

He argued that attempts to reduce corruption in the country should concentrate on enhancing judicial system’s authority, transparency, and accountability.

The Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria hosted the National Policy Dialogue on Corruption, Social Norms, and Behaviour Change in Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja. The event was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation.

Opagnews learned that Akpabio claimed that fighting corruption was a challenging and complex issue.

However, he continued,

“We must continue to emphasize the need to combat corruption and also highlight policies that will assist our nation in giving the fight the push that it deserves.

“In my opinion, combating corruption entails accountability and openness, as well as fortifying the legal systems.

“Such legal frameworks are not absent in Nigeria, and the 10th Senate, led by myself, is well-positioned to fill any legislative loopholes in the battle against corruption.

However, organizations like the ICPC must implement thorough anti-corruption legislation that make corrupt behavior illegal and set forth precise standards for moral conduct.

The Senate President asserted that Nigeria’s current legal system ensures the independence of the judiciary and law enforcement’s capacity to efficiently investigate and prosecute corruption cases. He was represented by his deputy chief of staff, Saviour Enyiekere.

He stated,

“This is because promoting moral qualities like honesty, openness, and accountability from a young age would help to develop a culture of ethics and integrity in the society through education and awareness initiatives.

“We must consciously work to urge the media, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to actively promote ethical behavior as well.

We must also look for innovative ways to promote a vibrant civil society that can hold all levels of government responsible.

If we want to win the battle against corruption, we also need to raise the level of financial transparency by encouraging ethical business conduct and sternly enforcing anti-corruption laws in both the public and private sectors.
