All about Temilade Openiyi aka Tems

Tems is a female Nigerian who recently won a Grammy. Temilade Openiyi, better known by his stage name Tems, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer from Lagos. She performs R&B, alternative R&B, and Afrobeats.

Early Life

Tems was born to a Nigerian mother and a British-Nigerian father on June 11, 1995 in Lagos, Nigeria. When she was five years old, her parents relocated to Nigeria after divorcing. After completing her secondary schooling at Dowen College, where her music teacher took note of her and encouraged her to study the piano and utilize the guitar as an accompaniment, she continued on to Monash South Africa for her university studies.

She started her musical career in 2018, learning self-production techniques on YouTube, and she self-produced and published her debut track, “Mr Rebel”. Later, she issued the single “Try Me” She was chosen by DJ Edu as one of the “ten musicians to watch” in 2020. On a modified version of American singer-songwriter Khalid and English electronic music duo Disclosure’s tune, Tems was joined by fellow Nigerian musician Davido “Know Your Worth”.

For Broken Ears, Tems’ first extended play, was released. It was mostly her who produced it, and the EP’s lead track, “Damages”, which peaked at number one on the Nigerian Apple Music list, number six on the then-recently formed TurnTable Top 50 chart, and garnered five million views on YouTube, becoming another follow-up hit to “Try Me.” Tems was a featured artist on fellow Nigerian singer Wizkid’s fourth studio album, Made in Lagos, and was on the track “Essence.” The song gave her her first career entrance on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 9, as well as the top place on the BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart.

Tems was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance, won two NAACP Image Awards, and received a Soul Train Music Award. Tems was included The Future Awards Africa: Class of 2020 on November 8, 2020.

2021, Release of the revised version of “Essence”, which includes an additional feature by Canadian singer Justin Bieber, helped the song climb to position nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Tems was a featured artist on Drake’s song “Fountains” from his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, which debuted at number 26 on the Hot 100, on September 3, 2021.

After signing with RCA records, Tems issued her second extended play, ‘If Orange Was a Place”, in 2021. The single “Crazy Tings”, which was released five days earlier and reached its peak at number three on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, was mostly produced by GuiltyBeatz. Later, Tems topped both the Billboard Emerging Artists chart and the Billboard Next Big Sound chart.

Leading Vibe Radio Show With Tems Debuts on Apple Music 1 in 2022. Tunji Balogun and Muyiwa Awoniyi both make an appearance in the first episode. Drake and Tems collaborated on Future’s tune “Wait for U”, which is off of Future’s ninth studio album, “I Never Liked You”. As a result of the song’s Hot 100 chart-topping debut, Tems became the first female African musician to ever do so. The song uses a sample of “Higher” by For Broken Ears.

For the soundtrack of the next Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Tems covered Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry”. With the release of her song “Free Mind” from For Broken Ears on the Hot 100, Tems earned her fourth Hot 100 entry. Tems was revealed as a guest performer on Beyoncé’s album Renaissance. She and Grace Jones co-wrote the song “Move”, which became Tems’ fifth Hot 100 entry. She collaborated with Rihanna on the song “Lift Me Up” for the soundtrack to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The song “Lift Me Up” from the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever received a nomination for “Best Original Song – Motion Picture” at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards from Tems, Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna, and Ryan Coogler.

Awards and Nominations

She received an Academy Award nomination and has won three All Africa Music Awards, two American Music Awards, two Bet Awards, and one Hip-Hop Award. The Headies five times, the NAACP Image Award twice, the Soul Train Music Awards twice, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards once, and the iHeartRadio Music Awards once.

Tems, Future, and Drake recently took up the Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for their song “Wait for U”. Tems became the first female musician from Nigeria to win a Grammy as a result.

Networth

She is one of the wealthiest Nigerian female musicians, with an estimated net worth of $1 million (N650,000), thanks to her flourishing music career.
