Hadith on Hijab: The Symbol of Devotion and Modesty in Islam

Sahih al-Bukhari 4758
Narrated `Aishah: May Allah bestow His Mercy on the early emigrant women. When Allah revealed: “… and to draw their veils all over their Juyubihinna (i.e., their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)…” (V.24:31) they tore their Murat (woolen dresses or waist-binding clothes or aprons etc.) and covered their heads and faces with those torn Muruts.

Releted: Hijab in the Bible & Why Hijab

  • According to this narration, the women who had emigrated from Mecca to Medina in the early days of Islam, upon hearing this commandment from Allah, tore their Murats, which were woolen dresses or waist-binding clothes, and used them to cover their heads and faces in compliance with the verse. This shows their commitment to following the teachings of Islam and their willingness to obey Allah’s commandments, even if it meant sacrificing their clothes. This hadith is significant in highlighting the importance of hijab in Islam and the willingness of early Muslim women to adhere to this practice. It also demonstrates the early Muslim community’s dedication to following the teachings of Islam as they understood them.
