Hadith on Allah: Eternal Knowledge & Justice

Sahih Muslim 179 c
Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was standing amongst us and (he said) four (things): Verily Allah does not sleep and it does not befit Him to sleep. He raises the scale and lowers it. The deeds of the day are presented to Him in the night and the deeds of the night in the day.

This hadith is a narration from Sahih Muslim, a collection of authentic sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). According to this narration, Abu Musa reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was standing among a group of people and he said four things:

  1. Allah does not sleep: This means that Allah (God) does not require rest or sleep, as He is eternal and all-powerful. Unlike humans and other creations, Allah’s existence and actions are not limited by time or space.
  2. It does not befit Allah to sleep: This emphasizes that sleep is not a characteristic or attribute of Allah. As the Supreme Creator, Allah is above human limitations and weaknesses, and is always fully aware and active.
  3. He raises the scale and lowers it: This refers to the concept of divine justice, where Allah measures and weighs the deeds of people on the Day of Judgment. It implies that Allah determines the worth and value of deeds, and rewards or punishes accordingly.
  4. Deeds of the day are presented to Him in the night, and deeds of the night in the day: This signifies that all human actions, whether done during the day or night, are constantly recorded and presented to Allah. It emphasizes that nothing is hidden from Allah’s knowledge and awareness, and He holds people accountable for their deeds.

Overall, this hadith emphasizes the belief in the omnipotence and omniscience of Allah, and the concept of divine justice in Islam. It highlights that Allah is always active, aware, and just in His actions, and that human deeds are constantly presented to Him for accountability.
