Hadith on Faith: Purity, Prayer, Charity, Patience, and the Quran

Sahih Muslim 223
Abu Malik at-Ash’ari reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Cleanliness is half of faith and al-Hamdu Lillah (all praise and gratitude is for Allah alone) fills the scale, and Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah) and al-Hamdu Lillah fill up what is between the heavens and the earth, and prayer is a light, and charity is proof (of one’s faith) and endurance is a brightness and the Holy Qur’an is a proof on your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, thereby setting themselves free or destroying themselves.

The Hadith (saying) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Sahih Muslim 223 states that:

  1. Cleanliness is an important part of faith, accounting for half of it, emphasizing the significance of cleanliness in Islam.
  2. Praises and gratitude to Allah fill the scale of good deeds, indicating the importance of acknowledging and appreciating Allah’s blessings.
  3. Constant glorification and praise of Allah fill the space between the heavens and the earth, highlighting the vastness and magnitude of Allah’s greatness.
  4. Prayer is a source of guidance and illumination in a believer’s life.
  5. Charity serves as evidence of one’s faith and sincerity in Islam.
  6. Patience and endurance in the face of challenges and difficulties are considered praiseworthy, signified by the term “brightness.”
  7. The Holy Qur’an is a decisive proof in favor of or against a person on the Day of Judgment, emphasizing the importance of following and adhering to the teachings of the Qur’an.
  8. Every individual is accountable for their actions and choices, and their deeds determine their own fate, either setting them free or leading to their own destruction.

Overall, this Hadith emphasizes the significance of cleanliness, gratitude, prayer, charity, patience, and adherence to the Qur’an in a believer’s life, and the individual responsibility in choosing one’s actions and their consequences.
