The Vivo V27 Pro is coming after last year’s flagship Android phones

What you need to know

  • Vivo today announced its latest mid-range phone series that boasts of multiple camera smarts and imaging capabilities.
  • The Vivo V27 Pro is powered by MediaTek’s 4nm-based Dimensity 8200 chipset, which promises a near-flagship experience.
  • Meanwhile, the regular version still includes the Dimensity 7200 SoC built on the 4nm process.
  • The Pro model will be launched in India, while the standard variant will be launched in global markets later this month.

Vivo was one of the most notable brands in the smartphone segment last year, releasing a series of mid-range phones with unique back panels that change color when exposed to sunlight or UV light. Last year’s aesthetic is now back for the company’s latest phones, the Vivo V27 and V27 Pro, along with a host of improvements and new features.

The new devices debuted today, with the Pro model targeting the Indian market. The Vivo V27 and V27 Pro share a similar design that comes with the same color-changing glass as last year’s models. The company uses Fluorite AG glass for the back design and claims it is “the first phone manufacturer to achieve this color-changing effect on the back cover of a phone.”

Vivo’s latest budget offerings also see the flagship specs of last year’s flagship android phones downgraded, including the 4nm-based Dimensity 8200 SoC for the V27 Pro.

MediaTek introduced a new processor late last year that promises an affordable flagship experience. The chipset includes an octa-core CPU, 3GPP Release-16 5G, 120Hz QHD display support, and Wi-FI 6E capabilities, all of which were found in MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9000 SoC last year.

Meanwhile, the regular V27 model is powered by the Dimensity 7200 chip, which is slightly lower than the Pro’s processor.

On the optical side of things, the V27 series cameras are a mixed bag. On the one hand, both models boast the Aura Light Portrait System, which Vivo claims “ensures natural night portraits.” The camera uses the Sony IMX766V sensor, which is just the rebranded Sony IMX766 sensor found on the Huawei Mate 50, OnePlus 10T, and Asus Zenfone 9, among other 2022 flagships.

However, both phones come with a triple camera setup that includes a 50MP primary shooter as opposed to the 64MP primary camera of the Vivo V25 series. This is paired with an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro sensor.

However, the V27 Pro’s selfie camera has been upgraded to a 50MP sensor versus the V25 Pro’s 32MP front-facing camera. The conventional V27’s front shooter is the same as its predecessor.

The screen on both V27 models is larger than its predecessors, with a 6.78-inch 3D curved FullHD+ AMOLED display up to 120Hz. This makes the new models slightly taller than the V25 series, which may be a bit difficult for people with smaller hands.

Keeping the lights on for both devices is a 4600mAh battery that supports 66W FlashCharge technology. Vivo claims that the fast charging capability can get the phone “to 43% in just 15 minutes, 72% in 30 minutes and 100% in less than an hour with the screen off.”

Elsewhere, the V27 series has up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. They run android 13 out of the box, with Funtouch OS 13 on top.

The V27 Pro is available in India starting today for $459. Later this month, Vivo will launch the standard variant for $399 in global markets including India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Pakistan, Egypt and the UAE.
