TOP 5 CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES IN NURSING (@3RD)

3. Short staffing.

“You do not know the value of what you have until you lose it” a saying goes thus. Many Hospital managements/administrations have realised this when nurses working in such hospitals leave in search for “greener pastures “. It is not rare to see nurses complain of short staffing in the hospitals they work in these days and this is a controversial issue in nursing worldwide.

Nurses for a long time have been downplayed as the lowliest healthcare profession, it’s a lot of discrimination and mistreatment. Sadly, many see nurses not as professionals but as mere maids, servants or “the help” who serve the hospital or patients but this is far from true.

This misconception has led many people to look at nurses with the ” who are you to talk to me? ” mindset (see my previous posts on common misconceptions) and as I would always say misconceptions often lead to mistreatment. This misconception has shaped many’s understandings of who a nurse is including the supposed educated ones. But as always misconceptions are meant to be corrected.

Back to the main point, this poor treatment many atimes from some hospital’s management/administration have led to nurses leaving to find a better place and environment to work in.

The new is expected to replace the old but in this case many do not want to take up the nursing profession due to the light in which it is being portrayed to the public despite the fact that “the new” keeps increasing. Hence, enlightenments such as this are needed and I am glad to take part in enlightening others.

Talking about new generations, a saying goes: “nurses eat their young” you might have heard of this. This saying means that many of the older nurses in the profession (remember! not all) act as if they do not want the Younger Nurses to replace them when the time comes. Hence, creating a void between them rather than a bond. This is saddening and many nurses who think so too are working on welcoming younger nurses in a more friendly manner rather than harshly therefore ” allowing the young to grow rather than feeding on them “and I hope this works out.

“Feeding on the young “has caused a lot of younger nurses to quit from this profession and that is why it is a causal factor to short staffing.

The main effect of short staffing among nurses in the hospital is : overworking of the available staff with insufficient renumeration and this is obviously an unpleasant experience for those who undergo it.
