Richa Sinha, a Class 11 student, made the decision to relocate from Ranchi to Kota earlier this year to enroll in a prestigious coaching institute. Unfortunately, no suicide note was found in her room, leaving the authorities with many unanswered questions. As a result, a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances leading to her tragic suicide. Richa’s body has been transferred to MBS Hospital for a post-mortem examination to shed light on this devastating incident.

This tragic event marks the 23rd suicide case of a coaching institute student in Kota this year alone. To put it into perspective, last year, fifteen students who were preparing for various competitive exams took their own lives in Kota. This alarming increase in such cases has sparked serious concerns and raised questions about the mental and emotional well-being of these young students who are striving for academic success.

The NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test) is one of the most competitive and challenging entrance exams in India, with thousands of students vying for a limited number of medical school seats. The intense pressure to perform well and secure a coveted spot in medical colleges often takes a toll on students’ mental health. The relentless grind of long study hours, high expectations, and the fear of failure can lead to overwhelming stress and anxiety.

Kota, often referred to as the coaching capital of India, attracts a large number of students from across the country who come here to prepare for various competitive exams, including NEET and IIT-JEE. While the city is renowned for its coaching institutes and academic facilities, it has also gained notoriety for the alarming rate of student suicides. These tragic incidents shed light on the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support and counseling services within the education system.

It is essential that educators, parents, and policymakers take immediate action to address this crisis. Providing students with access to mental health professionals, creating support networks, and reducing the immense academic pressure are some of the steps that can be taken to prevent such heartbreaking incidents.
