Controversy Surrounding OMG2: Hindu Outfit Offers Reward, Calls for Ban on Film

Controversy Surrounding OMG2: Hindu Outfit Offers Reward, Calls for Ban on Film

In a surprising turn of events, the Rashtriya Hindu Parishan Bharat, a Hindu organization, has stirred controversy by announcing a unique reward of ₹10 lakhs for anyone who slaps or spits on Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. The reason behind this unusual demand is Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Lord Shiva’s messenger in the movie “Oh My God 2” (OMG2), which the outfit claims has hurt the sentiments of the people.

The outfit’s president, Govind Parashar, emphasized that they find Akshay Kumar’s depiction disrespectful and offensive to their religious beliefs. He was quoted by The Print as saying that the portrayal of Lord Shiva’s messenger has been done in a way that has hurt the emotions of many followers. As a result, the organization is offering a substantial monetary reward for such an act, sparking a heated debate over freedom of expression versus religious sentiments.

To express their discontent, members of the Hindu organization took to the streets and burned effigies of Akshay Kumar and the film’s posters in Agra. They vowed to continue protesting against the film and its alleged portrayal of Lord Shiva’s messenger until their concerns are addressed. The outfit has also demanded that the movie be banned by both the censor board and the central government of India. They have warned of escalating protests if their demands are not met.

“OMG2” has been in the spotlight ever since its posters and teaser were released. The movie, directed by Amit Rai, was rumoured to have faced scrutiny from the censor board due to its religious theme. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) eventually cleared the film with an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate.

The film features Akshay Kumar in the role of Lord Shiva’s messenger, which has become the focal point of the controversy. Additionally, Pankaj Tripathi is a notable cast member of the film. The sequel to “OMG: Oh My God,” starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar, hit the theatres on August 11.

Film critic Taran Adarsh praised the film’s courage and highlighted the exceptional performances of the actors. He specifically commended Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam, and Pawan Malhotra. However, Adarsh also noted that the film’s courtroom sequences occasionally weigh it down with excessive dialogue.

Trade analyst Girish Johar shared similar sentiments about the movie. He acknowledged that “OMG2” has a distinctive audience and has faced promotional challenges due to its censorship troubles. Despite this, Johar estimated that the film could earn between ₹5 to ₹10 crore on its opening day.

The controversy surrounding “OMG2” raises important questions about the intersection of creative freedom and religious sentiments. While art has often been a platform for expression, it’s essential to consider how it affects different communities. As the film continues to be a topic of discussion, its box office performance and the ongoing protests will be closely watched by both the film industry and society at large.
