ARE WE SEEING BOLLYWOOD TURN TOWARDS THE SOUTH INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY FOR MORE HITS?

Remaking movies has become quite common, remaking is often done to make the Movie available in all languages to all language audiences. Mostly superhit movies in an original language are remade in different languages.

Although Bollywood has seen multiple hits of its own, it is a question of why they’re still so much into remaking South Indian Movies. From the recent super hit Vikram Vedha to the all-time favorite Hera Pheri (2000) there are at least 17 hits that were remade from South Indian super hits. So, what in South Indian movies is attracting Bollywood to go after them? Let us see.

Something that attracts viewers is the South Indian movie’s storyline and its solid script, the way they take the story keeps the viewers excited and on their heels. Bollywood has always tried to impart this in its movies. If we take a close look at the remade films, most of them are of the ‘crime’ ‘action’ ‘thriller’ genre based only.

All-time Bollywood blockbusters like Wanted, Hera Pheri and Singham in which superstars of Bollywood starred are all South Indian film remakes. And these movies are still widely streamed on all OTT platforms which shows the impact of those films on the fans. The impact these movies had on the Hindi-speaking audience in a way raised their expectations.

Here is a list of some South Indian movies and their Bollywood remakes from 2022 and back:

Vikram Vedha, a Tamil action film remade with the same name in 2022 starring Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Radhika Apte.

Helen, a Malayalam movie of the thriller genre remade as Mili in 2022. Janhvi Kapoor took the lead role.

Kolamaavu Kokila is another Tamil crime cum comedy thriller that was remade as Good Luck Jerry in 2022 with Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role.

Drishyam 2, is a Malayalam thriller with added family drama. This is remade with the same name, Ajay Devgan and Shreya took the lead roles.

Kshanam is a Telugu action film that is remade as Baaghi 2 which also served as the sequel to the 2016 Hindi film Baaghi. Tiger Shroff, Disha Patani, Jaqueline Fernandez, and Randeep Hooda led the movie.

Arjun Reddy a Telugu romance-based film is also remade into Kabir Singh starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani.

The 2015 Telugu box office hit Temper is also remade in Hindi with Ranveer Singh and was titled Simmba.

Drishyam is the predecessor of the Malayalam thriller Drishyam 2 and was remade in 2017.

Malayalam hit Manichitrathazhu which was remade into Bhool Bhulaiyaa. This movie has a separate fan base for its entertaining storyline which was beautifully carried by Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan.

In 2000, a Malayalam classic – Ramji Rao Speaking was remade into Bollywood’s biggest hit Hera Pheri. The movie is a cult comedy with Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Tabu, and Paresh Rawal.
