Facebook User Arrested for False Product Review of Erisco Foods

Chioma Egodi, a Facebook user, has been arrested by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for her negative review of an Erisco Foods product.

Egodi claimed that she found Nagiko Tomato Mix, a product from Erisco Foods, to be overly sweet in a Facebook post dated September 17, 2023.

According to her, "I went to buy Tin tomatoes yesterday that I will use to make stew. I didn’t see Gino and Sonia, so I decided to buy this one. When I opened it, I decided to taste it omo! Sugar is just too much! Haaa biko let me know if you have used this Tin tomato before because this is an ike gwuru situation," she wrote.

The company in a statement refuted her claims, stating that they were untrue and intended to damage its reputation adding that the post was misleading to its customers and meant to discredit the firm’s image.

Erisco also revealed that the post was instigated to cause public disaffection against its products.

"As previously instigated by some elements and syndicates who are uncomfortable with our increasing market dominance as a leading indigenous manufacturer of 100% natural tomato pastes," the company stated.

The company revealed that it decided to bring the Facebook post to the relevant authorities.
