I won’t beg for my freedom, says Nnamdi Kanu

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has communicated his refusal to beg for his release after Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja cleared him of charges.

In a letter dated August 25, 2023, and conveyed through his lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome, Kanu expressed his stance on the issue. He emphasized that his release has been validated by the Court of Appeal's judgment on October 13, 2022.

Kanu's legal team, led by Mike Ozekhome, raised concerns about the dire conditions of his detention facility under the Department of State Services (DSS). Ozekhome requested the appointment of a Magistrate by the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory to inspect the detention center.

Kanu believes that appealing for his release at this point would dishonor the memory of the late Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, who had tirelessly implored the Federal Government to fulfill his dying wish, only to be ignored. Kanu holds that the Court of Appeal's pronouncement remains legally binding, and he does not need to plead with the Federal Government for his release.

Kanu's legal team advocates for an expeditious hearing of the appeal filed by the Federal Government in the Supreme Court. This action aligns with the Criminal Appeals Practice Directions of the Supreme Court.

In response to the State Security Service's (SSS) refusal to provide Kanu's medical records as directed by the court, Mike Ozekhome initiated a contempt proceeding against the SSS and its Director General. This move aims to address the violation of court orders and the disregard for legal directives.
