ও আবার কানে শোনে না। প্রথমে এটা নিয়ে সন্দেহ ছিল আমার। একদিন নিশ্চিত হলাম। বইয়ের তাক থেকে একটা কাচের ট্রফি পড়ে গিয়ে ভেঙে গেল। শব্দ হলো খুব। অন্যদিকে ফিরে ছিল ইঁদুরটা। বুঝলাম ও কানে শোনে না।
(ও,,,করে বলতে খারাপ লাগছে) কিন্তু ওর কোনো নাম নেই। মানে আমি কখনো শুনিনি। ওর বাবা-মা নিশ্চয়ই কোনো একটা নাম রেখেছিল। আমি জানি না। আমাকে বলার প্রয়োজনও হয়নি। আমিও ওর কোনো নাম রাখিনি। কারণ, আমার বন্ধুরা আমাকে যে কটা নাম দিয়েছে, তার সব কটিই পচা। একটাও পছন্দ হয়নি আমার। আমি নাম রাখলে ওর পছন্দ হবে কেন?
তবে একটা ব্যাপার বলে রাখি। ও কিন্তু অন্য ইঁদুরের মতো না। একটু আলাদা। সব ঠিক আছে। শুধু লেজ নেই। ইঁদুর সমাজে এ জন্য নানা যন্ত্রণা সহ্য করতে হয়েছে ওকে। এসবে ও অবশ্য বিশেষ কান দেয় না! কী করে দেবে? ও তো কানেই শোনে না। আর জন্ম থেকেই যখন লেজ নেই, তখন আর উচ্চবাচ্য করে কী হবে?
সব ইঁদুরের চারটা বিশেষ দাঁত থাকে। ওপরে আর নিচে দুটো করে। এই দাঁতগুলো বাড়তে থাকে সব সময়। ওগুলোকে ঠিকঠাক সাইজে রাখাতে কিছু না কিছুতে কামড়াতে হয় ওদের। এ কারণেই ওদের কোনো অবসর নেই। সারা দিন কাটাকুটি করে ওরা। বিশেষ করে বই-খাতা ইঁদুরের বেশ পছন্দ। পড়াশোনা করার জন্য না কিন্তু, দাঁত দিয়ে কেটে টুকরা টুকরা করার জন্য।
তো বলেছিলাম আমার বন্ধুটি একটি বিশেষ ইঁদুর। ওর লেজ নেই। কানেও শুনতে পায় না। আরও একটা ব্যাপার আছে। সব ইঁদুরের মতো ওর দাঁত সব সময়
বাড়েনা। বুঝতেই পারছ, কাটাকুটি করার ঝামেলা ওর নেই। অবসর কাটায় আমার বন্ধু! বইপত্র কাটাকুটির বদলে পড়াই নাকি ভালো! ইশারায় কথাটি আমাকে জানিয়েছে ও।
পড়তে পড়তে পণ্ডিত হওয়ায় বেশ ভাবুক হয়েছে আমার বন্ধুটি। অবসর সময়ে ইঁদুর সমাজের কথা ভাবে। ভাবে ওর বন্ধুবান্ধবের কথা। ওর কিছু ভালো ইঁদুর বন্ধু আছে, যারা ওকে ভালোবাসে। ওর লেজ নিয়ে ঠাট্টা করে না। শ্রদ্ধা করে ওর মতামতকে, গুরুত্ব দেয়। জোরে চিৎকার করে কান পরীক্ষা করে না। এমনকি ওর কথামতো কাজও করে মাঝেমধ্যে!

খুঁজেপেতে আমার বন্ধু একটা পরীক্ষা চালাল। গিনিপিগ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করল ইঁদুর বন্ধুদের। যুক্তি দিয়ে প্রমাণ করল, ইঁদুরের দাঁত বড় হওয়া ব০৮ন্ধ করা সম্ভব। শুধু একটু ত্যাগ স্বীকার করতে হবে। কেটে ফেলতে হবে নিজের লেজ। প্রমাণ হিসেবে বন্ধুদের চোখে আঙুল দিয়ে দেখাল নিজের না থাকা লেজুটা। দুই ভাগ হয়ে গেল ওর বন্ধুরা। একদল লেজ বিসর্জন দিতে রাজি। আরেক দল মাথা নেড়ে জানাল, লেজ বিসর্জন দেওয়া সম্ভব না। এটাও বড় গলায় বলল যে, লেজ ছাড়া ইঁদুর হয় না। পরোক্ষভাবে আমার আরকি!
বন্ধুকে অপমান * কষ্টকর এক পদ্ধতিতে লেজ বিসর্জন দিল কিছু। স্বেচ্ছাসেবক ইঁদুর। ইঁদুর জাতির দুঃখ লাঘবের জন্য কষ্ট স্বীকার আর দুরু দুরু বুকে ফলাফলের অপেক্ষা করল সবাই। সব পরীক্ষা সফল হয় না। এটিও সফল হলো না। ইঁদুরের দাঁত বড় হওয়া বন্ধ হয়নি।
সেই থেকে আমার বন্ধুটি আমার ঘরে থাকে। ইঁদুর সমাজের কর্মকাণ্ডে তেমন একটা যোগ দেয় না। মিছিল-মিটিং-আন্দোলন, কিছুই করে না। কিছুটা, এড়িয়ে চলে স্বেচ্ছাসেবক বন্ধুদের।
ওর জন্য আমার খারাপ লাগছে। সবার কথা ভাবে আমার বন্ধু। কিন্তু আমার বন্ধুর কথা ভাবে না কেউ। তাই তোমরা যখন কোনো লেজ ছাড়া ইঁদুরকে বইপত্র ঘাঁটতে দেখবে, তখন মনে করবে, ওটা হয়তো আমার বন্ধু। বা আমার বন্ধুর বন্ধু, যারা বইপত্র না কেটে আমাদের উপকার করতে চেয়েছিল। এমনকি লেজ বিসর্জন দিতেও দ্বিধা করেনি। তবু ওদের দাঁত বড় হওয়া থামেনি। বইপত্র কাটাকুটি করা ছাড়া ওদের আর কোনো উপায় নেই!
