NEW DELHI: This Sunday (February 19) turned out to be a super Sunday for Domestic aviation with the highest ever number of daily flyers — at over 4.4 lakh — on the 6,068 flights operated by scheduled airlines — another record high.
Since November 2022, India has seen a huge surge in travel within the country with listed stakeholders like airlines, hotels and online travel agencies (OTAs) announcing their highest ever quarterly revenues and profits in October-December 2022.
“The Indian aviation industry has achieved a significant milestone as domestic aviation operations reach new heights,” the aviation ministry tweeted on Monday.
Meanwhile, DGCA domestic air traffic figures for last month announced on Monday showed over 1.2 crore people flew within the country, 95.7% more than January 2022’s 64 lakh.
At 1.25 crore, January’s figure was only marginally lower than 1.27 crore of December 2022 which is the peak travel month due to the short relatively burst of winter holidays unlike the much longer summer break.
The last pre-Covid peak travel months of December 2019 had seen 1.3 crore domestic flyers and 1.29 crore in the preceding month. Numbers clearly show that domestic air travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels.
While IndiGo remained the domestic market leader in January 2023 with 54.6% market share, Air India again became the second largest domestic airline at 9.2% displacing soon-to-be-merged-with-it Vistara (8.8%) to the third spot.
Adding AirAsia India’s 7.4%, the Tata Group airlines’ combined domestic market share was 25.4%. Struggling to raise funds for months, SpiceJet — which has not got even a single B737 MAX from Boeing due to its financial condition after 2019 despite having nearly 200 of them on order — was at fifth spot with 7.3 market share. Wadia Group GoAir, which has been delaying salaries to employees, was at the third position at 8.4% (after IndiGo and AI).
Akasa, which started flying last August, is already at 2.8% domestic market share in January 2023 thanks to steady aircraft induction.
According to the DGCA data, the most punctual airline for domestic flights last month was IndiGo with 84.6% of them operating on time at Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. IndiGo was followed by Akasa (76.9%), Vistara (76.6%), Air India (75.7%), AirAsia India (61.1%), SpiceJet (58.9%), Alliance Air (54.6%) and GoAir (50.7%).
Achche din are back!
