Life is full of choices, and Mercedes-two Benz’s subcompact crossovers reflect an endless one: beauty or utility? The 2024 Mercedes Benz GLB Class is the boxier counterpart of the GLA-class, although whether that makes it smarter or dorkier is a matter of personal preference. Both Mercedes-Benzes are powered by the same 221-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available, as are a slew of upgrades that may transform the interior from business to Club RGB with an optional ambient lighting kit with lighted vents.

Despite its lack of horsepower, which is reserved for the AMG GLB35, which is examined separately, the GLB-class has superb driving characteristics that make it comfortable and enjoyable to drive. The GLB has more cargo room than the hotter GLA-class because to its squarer rear end, and it may even be purchased with an optional and extremely snug third row. The GLB isn’t a tiny G-class, but it’s a viable alternative to other small luxury crossovers like the BMW X2, Audi Q3, and Lexus NX.

Mercedes-Benz has given the GLB-class a facelift for 2024, with new bumpers, headlights, taillights, and an improved interior. Mercedes’ updated software now includes the previously optional 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Mercedes has also added an AMG Line interior with a heated steering wheel as standard. The GLB’s new 48-volt hybrid-assist electrical system, hidden behind all the new metal and leather, might boost the GLB’s EPA estimations.

GLB250 4Matic – $44,000 (est)

The GLB-class has only one trim level, but the 4Matic model adds all-wheel drive for a few thousand dollars more. Then, for the 360-degree camera, we’d purchase the optional Parking package. We’d also spring for the Burmester surround sound system, which now supports Dolby Atmos audio.

The GLB-class has cruise control, active brake aid, and adaptive braking as standard, while safety technologies like as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot help are optional.

While the GLB-class lacks a strong quantity of basic interior amenities, it makes up for it with its infotainment and technological features. A pair of 12.3-inch screens manage driving information and entertainment on every GLB250. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB-C connections, and Bluetooth are all available for connecting your phone to the GLB250. Package for parking the 360-degree camera. We’d also spring for the Burmester surround sound system, which now supports Dolby Atmos audio.

The inside of the GLB-class is large, with 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats and 62 cubic feet with those seats folded down, which is nearly comparable to the next-size-up BMW X3. The entry-level GLB-class isn’t very well-appointed, but it does get power front seats, dual-zone automatic temperature control, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel as standard. Heated seats, as well as ventilated seats, are optional, as is a third row of seats.

We anticipate that the majority of consumers will spend money on popular premium amenities like leather upholstery and internal ambient lighting. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque sits behind the three-pointed star on the GLB’s grille. For 2024, a 48-volt hybrid system is added, although total output stays same.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. While we haven’t tested the new 48-volt system in the GLB, the previous all-wheel-drive GLB accomplished a 6.0-second sprint to 60 mph without it. We didn’t find the GLB250 to be especially sporty, but its ride and handling are comfortable and adequate for an SUV of this size.

Mileage (2024 Mercedes benz GLB Class)-

The EPA has not yet provided figures for the 2024 GLB-class, but we anticipate a small improvement over last year’s predictions owing to a new 48-volt electrical system. In 2023, the EPA estimated fuel efficiency ratings for the front-wheel-drive GLB were 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined; the all-wheel-drive version is virtually the same, though highway economy lowers to an estimated 30 mpg.

These figures were comparable, but somewhat lower than the BMW X1’s EPA-estimated mileage. Last year’s GLB250 4Matic surpassed its EPA rating with a 32 mpg score on our 75-mile motorway fuel economy test route, surpassing a similar X1 by 1 mpg. We’ll keep you updated as soon as the EPA releases its results for the upgraded GLB’s powertrain.
