The 2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato auto, at least as we know it, is no longer with us. Starting in 2027, the Italian automaker intends to sell entirely electric vehicles, with the present gas-powered portfolio being phased out by 2025. But, before that occurs, legendary Italian design studio Zagato has opted to commemorate the Giulia with an eye-catching one-off known as the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato.

While the SWB Zagato has totally distinctive exterior, it is based on the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio, which packs a twin-turbo 2.9 litre V-6 and the ZF six-speed manual transmission available in Europe. Zagato, on the other hand, upgraded the engine to the specifications found in the track-focused, automatic-only Giulia GTAm, producing a robust 533 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque.

As the SWB component of the name suggests, Zagato shortened the Giulia’s wheelbase to produce the slim two-door body, which is made of carbon fibre. Zagato makes no performance promises for the one-off vehicle, but we’d expect it to have comparable specs to the GTAm, with a sprint to 60 mph in the mid-three-second range and a quarter-mile pace under 12 seconds.

The Zagato bodywork of the Giulia SWB bears homage to the SZ, a strangely designed Zagato-built sports car from the 1990s. The sleek two-door design is reminiscent of the Jaguar F-type, but with a distinctly Alfa Romeo look. The headlights are similar to those found on the new Tonale crossover, and an air inlet cut out above the triangle grille adds aggressiveness. Following the expressive front end is a smooth profile and a sleek rear end with a slim taillight curving around the edge of the body atop a hefty diffuser.

The Giulia SWB Zagato was designed for a German customer who is a die-hard Alfa Romeo fan, owning every model in the company’s current lineup as well as a 1990 SZ and a rare 8C Competizione. His garage also appears to house a number of limited edition Aston Martin Zagato vehicles. While no pricing was given for the Giulia SWB Zagato, we presume the purchaser paid a high amount for the one-of-a-kind vehicle. However, considering the customer’s love of Alfas and Zagatos, as well as the Giulia SWB Zagato’s jaw-dropping beauty, we assume the price was well worth it.

Zagato, an Italian coachbuilder, has unveiled its latest car, the Giulia SWB Zagato. It’s based on the tough Giulia GTAm super saloon, although Zagato claims the Giulia SWB was developed and produced totally in-house.

Zagato and Alfa Romeo, both located in Milan, have a long history of collaboration, with the coachbuilder beginning working on Alfas with the G1 in 1921. Since then, we’ve seen Zagato adaptations of Alfa Romeos in the shape of the 1600 Junior Zagato, the SZ, and, most recently, the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale based on the Dodge Viper.

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato auto pays homage to earlier designs as a little belated centenary commemoration of Zagato and Alfa Romeo collaboration. The overall dimensions are more close to Zagato’s TZ3 and Junior Zagato than Alfa Romeo’s Giulia saloon.

At the front, we notice headlights inspired by the Tonale, as well as a very low bonnet line and a wider version of Alfa Romeo’s “Trefoil” triangular grille. The GTAm wheels are finished in silver, and behind them are massive GTAm brakes with yellow callipers.

The two-tone paint scheme is intended to give the SWB Zagato a more streamlined appearance. The roof has a double-bubble shape, while the doors lack visible handles and are activated by a small button on the b-pillar. Zagato’s preferred ‘Kammback’ rear end design is seen here, along with a massive rear light bar. A massive diffuser and twin-exit central exhaust, identical to the GTAm, are located beneath. Almost every body panel on the Zagato has been redesigned and built from carbon fibre, putting it under the GTAm’s 1,580kg kerbweight.

Under that long, low hood (which also opens forward) lies a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 from the Quadrifoglio GTAm model. Zagato hasn’t provided performance data, but with about 533bhp and 600Nm of torque available, it’s unlikely to have been modified. Power is routed to the rear wheels, however instead of an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, a six-speed manual is offered in select regions on the Giulia Quadrifoglio. The Zagato also has Alfa Romeo’s ‘DNA’ driving modes, but adds a ‘racing’ option.

The interior has several standard Giulia Quadrifoglio components, including as the infotainment screen and many controls. There’s a lot of green trim to match the outside colour, and Zagato employed carbon-fibre material for the majority of the dash and door cards. ‘Z’ branded leather seats are also included.

According to Zagato, the Giulia SWB was created for a German customer who already owns an Alfa Romeo S.Z. and many Aston Martin Zagatos. With the GTAm basic model costing roughly £155,000, Zagato’s design would have cost around £300,000.
