Akwa Ibom-Born Chef, Hilda Baci, Breaks Guinness World Record for Cooking - All You Need to Know

Popular Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, has broken Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by any individual. The restaurateur began her record-breaking cooking marathon on Thursday May 11, 2023, at 4pm local time (16.00 GMT). Hilda beat the 4-day mark of the previous Guinness World Record Cook-a-thon title holder, on the early hours of Monday May 15, 2023.

The former holder of the Guinness world Record Cooking title before Hilda Baci was an Indian chef by name Lata Tondon who grabbed the title in 2019. Hilda had, however, taken the title from Tondon after she surpassed her 87 hours 50 minutes record on Monday morning, and even continued her cooking feat beyond the scheduled 4pm. As at the time of this report, the Nigerian chef has cooked for 96 hours straight and still targeting 100 hours. This makes her the first individual in the world to have cooked for such a long time without break.

During the cooking marathon, Hilda was not allowed to sit down. She only had 5 minutes rest every hour, and a few moment for changeups and brushing.

The cook-a-thon which took place at Amore Gardens in Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria, had thousands of spectators present to witnesses her cooking feat and millions watching her across Nigeria and other parts of the world.

Although she was the only one doing the cooking, Hilda was assisted by Chef Sunny and a few others who stood by her to provide her needs in the kitchen. By the end of the marathon, Hilda had cooked hundreds of different kinds of food, mostly indigenous Nigerian dishes, feeding nearly 3000 people, and stealing the heart of everyone who witnessed the event.

Hilda Effiong Bassey, 27, was born on September 20, 1996, in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. While Hilda's father, Effiong Bassey Hails from Nsit Ubium, and an Ibibio man, her mother, Mrs. Lynda Ndukwe, is an Igbo woman and the CEO of Calabar Pot, an outdoor and indoor catering services firm based in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.

The  event also witnessed the visitation of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other prominent Nigerians and celebrities. The Akwa Ibom State government and all the good people of the state have joined well meaning Nigerians to celebrate their daughter, Hilda Bassey, for breaking the Guinness World Cook-a-thon Record.

The state government in a statement issued through the States Commissioner for Information termed Hilda's cooking feat as a "historic move". This was contained in a press release titled: "The Guinness Record Attempt: A Dakkada Exemplar," as approved by the state governor, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Orman Esin, and signed by the commissioner for Information.

Hilda Effiong Bassey's Guinness World Record is a double win for the people of Akwa Ibom State as it adds up to the existing Guinness World Record presently held by the State. Akwa Ibom State is currently holding the record for the "Ibom 999 Carol", the largest Christmas gathering in the world. 

As an indigene of the state, winning a Guinness World Record is grabbing more attention from people around the world to Akwa Ibom State. This in turn will help boost the state's plan toward modernizing its tourism sector.
